Sabrina Cooper (31 August 2019). "Why Michael Ende's 'The Neverending Story' is cult". Deutsche Welle . Retrieved 8 December 2020. In the novel, Bastian is portrayed as overweight with glasses; he does not carry this trait in the film series, instead being a small and slim boy with no glasses. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprietor reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. Shortly after, he "borrows" the book and begins to read it in the school attic where he is drawn into the mythical land of Fantasia, which desperately needs a hero to save it from destruction. The second half of the book feels... never ending. It's a slow, overdone, meander through a fairly arbitrary world and the 8 year old I was reading it to (we finished the book on her 9th birthday) was, like me, less than gripped. We soldiered on... and on... and on.

In the Hallmark mini-series Tales from the Neverending Story, Gmork is a shapeshifter in the service of Xayide. He also has the ability to travel in between worlds. In fact at the beginning of the series he causes the death of Bastian's mother, under the appearance of red eyed Groenendael (a variety of a Belgian Shepherd). Later on, he assumes the identity of Mr. Blank, a substitute teatcher in Bastian's school. When in Fantasia, Gmork mostly takes on the form of a human with canine features. His role also changes from more menacing at the beginning to that of more comical underling, after being punished by Xayide for his inability to steal the book from Bastian. At the end of the series, he is assumed to be shot with an arrow by Atreyu. But his fate remains unclear. File this under "famous book I've never read". I first learned about this novel because of the infamous poster art for the film version, and the image of a kid riding atop a strange looking dragon always intrigued me. So, at long last, I felt it was high time to finally figure out why this book has had such staying power. I never even saw the movie adaption, despite it being such a staple of many people's childhoods, so I was going into this almost totally blind.

Xayide is portrayed by actress and model Clarissa Burt in The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, which is loosely based upon the second half of the novel. In the adaption, she is the personified avatar of an entity similar to the Nothing, called the Emptiness, which is born of the dying imagination of the collective human species. In both media, she gives Bastian the belt Ghemmal, which turns its wearer invisible and was intended to spy on Atreyu. She meets her end in the film when Bastian uses his last wish to give her a sense of compassion, whereupon she destroys herself to amend the damage done by her. the neverending story". 2 May 2012. The book seems to reach the end of the film by about half way through. That first half is cleverly done with a good idea about binding the reader and the adventure together in a 'meta' way that works out really well. The pacing is ok, the imagination great - chaotic, but good. Atreyu finally meets Gmork in Spook City, where he is chained, and Atreyu employs the name Nobody to hide his identity in shame of his failure to complete his quest. Gmork confesses that he has been hunting a boy sent on a quest by the Childlike Empress to find her a new name, but lost him early on. He then met the Princess of Darkness, Gaya, who upon hearing of his mission to help the Nothing, chained Gmork with an unbreakable chain and leapt into the Nothing, leaving him to starve. Gmork explains to Atreyu the nature of the Nothing, and that a Fantastican who enters it, must become a lie in the human world. Eventually, Gmork reveals the name of the boy he is pursuing, and Atreyu reveals his identity, which causes Gmork to laugh until he finally succumbs to starvation. As Atreyu approaches the dead wolf, the carcass grabs Atreyu in its jaws, which, ironically, prevents Atreyu from succumbing to the overpowering urge exerted by the Nothing to throw himself into it. He is freed from Gmork's grip by Falkor, who escapes with him to the Ivory Tower. The Neverending Story" is sort of like Christopher Nolan's "Inception," except it's not a dream within a dream, but a story within a story (within a story) and at some points the realms merge. Part of me feels a very "Dark Tower" undertone, in which there are hidden worlds all around us, and another part of me feels like this entire story is a cop out--like, "It was all a dream." Now that's not to say it was; but quite literally, it might have been. In the miniseries Tales from the Neverending Story, Xayide is portrayed as the Childlike Empress' sister and the ruler of a Dark City. The third gate is the No-Key Gate, an indestructible keyless door that responds to a person's will. Only by losing the desire to enter may one get it to open.

Yikka ( Jicha) is a female hinny who acts as Bastian's steed during the second half of the novel. She is quite faithful to him, but under Xayide's influence, Bastian allows her to leave his side to start a family with an attractive male pegasus. Based on Michael Ende's beloved classic novel of the same name, Wolfgang Petersen's film adaptation is treasured by young and older folks alike. (It even had a fresh burst of social and cultural relevance after the touching homage to its theme song in the third season of Netflix's Stranger Things.) This beautiful story about the power of youth and the magic that comes with believing in oneself ended up also being the most expensive movie ever made in German cinema, even though the film itself is in English. Falkor is very wise, incredibly optimistic, dignified, and a very friendly sophisticated being from Fantasia. He gives advice to people when they have lost hope in many things they set out to do whether in a quest for what they seek or in some cases people and beings have given up altogether and lost faith. Mostly during the Nothings destruction of Fantasia, he helps Atreyu along the way of his quest to stop The Nothing. Falkor's attitude purely comes from his heart, it is proven that his openness to making friends means a lot to everyone he encounters, into which Falkor in return treasures every friendship he has. Falkor only makes enemies of those threaten his friends or Fantasia. On 1 September 2016, a Google Doodle created by Google artist Sophie Diao commemorated the publication of the work.
