About this deal

Ultimately, if you’ve got a Garmin device and want weight automatically updated on your account/devices, there are not many clean options. There are some 3rd party integrations that have half-heartedly worked over the years (like MyFitnessPal syncing), but usually they eventually break. This one tends to just work with minimal fuss, even if it’s at a substantial premium compared to competitor offerings. Now, how do I get YouTube running on that display? Moving to 3rd parties, things are super mixed. Some platforms support it, but many disappointingly do not. This isn’t entirely the fault of Garmin, but it’s also an area they could put some effort into convincing their partners (cough, Zwift). Assuming an app is supported though, you can link it up to get weight data automatically sent to it. For example, here’s TrainingPeaks:

Yeah, I’d love to be able to do more testing with a larger group of people beyond our household, but realistically speaking that’s just not viable right now in a COVID era where I live. Similar to things like Dexa scans/etc…

On the plus side, the Body scale is super simple to use, teams with the decent Health Mate app and works with a lot of the other main health and fitness apps too. It’s also bigger than a lot of smart scales, making it a good choice for anyone with big feet or who struggles with balance. Tip: Your Garmin Connect account can be a dormant one that you only use for the purpose of sending the data somewhere else. Easy to set up with convenient WiFi and Bluetooth connection, the Garmin Index S2 is a decent but expensive smart scale suitable for lots of people. Eufy's Smart Scale P2 Pro is a feature-rich full-body monitoring system that can measure 16 different metrics for multiple members of your household, including pets and babies. But this smart measuring device can do more than just measure weight and body fat – the P2 Pro can also measure resting heart rate, protein percentage and body age, among other things.

Sadly, not all measurements are accurate, especially fat calculations. During our testing, both visceral and subcutaneous fat levels were reported as high, despite the overall body fat level being in the normal range. Even more strangely, this overall fat level was also much higher than expected; our reviewer had a DEXA scan done and been given a fat score of 12% three months prior to testing the Eufy P2 Pro, yet the scale said he had 21% body fat – and that's without any visible changes in physique. There are 2 ways to pair the S2 Scales to your Connect account; one is to the app and the other is to use an ANT+ dongle to link your Garmin Express on your desktop computer to the scales. I tried the ANT+ dongle first and half got it to work and then gave up. So use the app. You can also connect it with your wi-fi network, to make data transfer as easy as possible between the scales and the app. The S2 is consistently 4-5% off compared to other measures. When I searched to see if anyone else had this problem, I came across this thread on the Garmin forums: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/index-s2-smart-scale/255098/s2-body-fat-not-accurate It suggests a “body age” and gives a body score out of 100, giving users a label (e.g. “good” or “poor”). It’s a fairly simple ranking but could be helpful to some people. Like most smart scales, you can view a section on how your weight and body fat has changed over time, but it doesn’t show info for the other metrics, which feels like an oversight.

You might have two houses, you might want to connect to a hotel WiFi or a holiday house WiFi or you might want to go to a friend/family’s house to regularly weigh one of them. My use case is to go to a nearby elderly relative in a care home. Regardless of the use case, you need to do this After all that’s done, it’ll display your weight one final time, and then shut itself off – waiting patiently for its 30 seconds of use each day.

Do I need a smart scale that measures body fat?

But within that ecosystem it’s pretty good. For example, your Garmin watch will automatically update your weight anytime it syncs with your phone, which, is basically 24×7: And yup, even the weather, showing the slated high/low for the day as well as the current temperature. The idea here simply being that if you’re getting ready in the morning and just going in or out of the shower, this could guide your clothing choices for the day. The design is sleek and minimalist, the display (which only appears when the scale is in use) is bright and easy to read while standing up, and the non-slip glass platform feels sturdy and stable underfoot. They provide consistent measurements, and for anyone who already uses Garmin products, these could be a good addition to complete their health monitoring within the Garmin Connect app.
