About this deal

Hornblower yells that God was on the mainyard, that puts Finch into action and they both jump to the mainyard, then meets with Midshipman Bracegirdle, then descends to deck to safety. This is a review of the Penguin edition that comes with an introductory foreword by Bernard Cornwell. There were just enough differences to make me think how much the written word had changed since I was born (the book was written around 1949). I’ve got to be honest: it’s really quite nice to see our hero go through growing pains like this, actual failure and a genuine sense of inadequacy. HMS Indefatigable is at anchor in Plymouth Sound waiting to escort the transport ships HMS Sophia and HMS Dumbarton to France with a wing of the 43rd Foot, Earl of Edrington, major commanding, and French troops under the command of the Marquis of Pouzauges, Brigadier General of His Most Christian Majesty Louis XVII to France to attempt to take the country from Napoleon.

Anticipating capture Hornblower prepares to throw his dispatches overboard, but is persuaded by the Duchess, who also reveals her true identity as a popular actress, to allow her to conceal them under her clothes, as she is sure to be repatriated immediately. Patrick O'Brian's works have become very well known of late, in my opinion as action and adventure stories Forester's works are far superior.Too many folks I know have corrupted their youth early on with the strategy of power, its dark secrets veiled in a “tedious argument of insidious intent” to lead their hapless victims to an “overwhelming question” and force their hands. After reading Jason Koivu’s beautiful five-star review here on GR, I’ve decided to someday (if I get the chance) revisit it! Hornblower reports aboard HMS Justinian , Captain Keenecommanding , in January, 1794, as a midshipman of seventeen years of age; this is unusual as most begin their careers at the age of twelve or younger. Given the success of their mission Hornblower realises the loss of the jolly boat will not be held against him, but still regrets the inevitable death of Hales.

As they listen, they could hear the characteristic subtle sounds of other ships nearby, invisible in the fog. Guided by Foster, and steered by Hornblower, the fire ship clears the Santa Barbara and the Dauntless then as the fire burns through the tiller ropes, they jumped overboard, Hornblower shoved by Foster.

Also, if Forester ever explained the basic nautical terms of a sail-driven ship and its rigging and operations, he doesn't do it here; technical terms are used abundantly and you glean (or sometimes, don't glean) an approximation of the meaning from the context, unless you've picked up a definition elsewhere. I’ve read some of Bernard Cornwell’s books before, like the Sharpe series set during the same time period and within the same British miliary. Through a series of challenges and adventures both in and out of combat, Hornblower discovers he is actually talented in both seamanship and leadership. After the rescue, he and his assistants, some Spanish fishermen, are forced out to sea by bad weather and found by another British frigate. When I finally picked up this book, nearly 60 years later, I was as unfit as ever to read it - for a different reason.

And besides - when I was a kid I was much more intent on doing what the other kids liked to do: have fun and joke around. This book is a good series, then, of short and stirring adventures that introduce the unseasoned youth that would later become the man of experience, the midshipman that would later become the admiral. I was equally charmed and repelled by Forester's vulnerable, volatile midshipman; but what remained constant were my curiosity to see what became of him and the pleasure I found reading about his adventures. The book's story continues with Hornblower's life through his promotion to Lieutenant (while he's in a Spanish prison as a prisoner of war).
