Schools love it, teachers love it and those with a burgeoning interest in all things nylon strung love it because they can dip a tow into the classical world and score themselves a good guitar without spending a large sum of money. The rosewood fretboard felt great under the fingers, and for us was one of the biggest highlights of the whole guitar. We were also impressed by the finish on the fret edges – there were no sharp edges, burrs, or any sign of fret sprout, all things that regularly occur on guitars at this price point, but Yamaha’s QA has been extremely effective in this area. The action on the C40 is about 4mm at the 12th fret. I find this a little high although it is around average for many classical guitars. The C40 is still playable, but a higher action makes pressing the strings down harder on the fingers. This can discourage beginners.

Thank you for your interest in our C40 Mk II Classical Guitar. The C40 Mk II is a fantastic instrument and perfect for beginners of classical guitar guitar playing (for instance, traditional Spanish guitar music). Yamaha have opted to include the pricier wood on this budget model, and it makes a big difference to the looks and playability. Yamaha is one of the oldest and widely known companies around. Generally, classical guitars are played without plectrums - instead classical guitarists usually play with their fingers directly on the strings. The CX40 is the electro version of the Yamaha C40 classical guitar which has outstanding value for money and a combination of exceptional playability and superb tone. Both CG104A's to my dismay display exactly the same fretbuzz on A and D, as the C40s im reviewing here - and are being returned.
