About this deal

It just felt like “oh we need some drama, let’s just make it so that everyone is on skates and has an excuse to hit each other. SLIGHT SPOILIES] a pregnancy that isn’t talked about beyond that scene, the whole house/money situation, any of the plot lines surrounding her writing for the school publication, her giant mysterious injury (which literally isn’t actually brought up until the last 5% of the book and it’s done in such a ‘oh yeah this is what happened’ sort of way). But when a nasty breakup causes her to be iced out by friends who are more loyal to the game than to her, Chase becomes an unexpected support. The main female character doesn't fare much better, sounding like a 'pick me' / 'not like other girls' every two sentences. Avery does a wonderful job of showing that relationships have problems, they go through obstacles, they hit walls and most of all they’re NOT perfect.

Those things saved the book for me, but there are definitely some developmental issues for me, which would make you think I would maybe DNF or not read another book but something keeps me holding out hope that the story telling will get better because I really enjoy the style and characters she creates. The heroine starts dating the hero, a hockey player from her school rival’s team (which her brother and ex both play for her school’s team). They became vulnerable in every way possible to each other and becoming each other's support system, each other's biggest cheerleaders, they're just perfection.

After a chance encounter at a nightclub, the two of them form an unlikely friendship that develops into something more. The two have an incredible chemistry and respect for each other, everything from their communication from consent, to what they wanted in the bedroom to what they wanted for their futures.

Authors, if you are a member of the Goodreads Author Program, you can edit information about your own books. The author does a fantastic job of writing a unique plot, while really gasping the emotions of a whirlwind college romance between two people that weren’t initially interested in seeking a relationship. and while i’d normally agree, i’m here to inform you that i actually finished this and genuinely wished it was longer. They get together early, so early that I was truly concerned with where she would go with this because it was a big book.

There were so many random scenes that added absolutely nothing to the plot that went on for PAGES UPON PAGES. She could have taken out so much of them in their happy phase (especially since the break up is late and doesn’t last long) and focused more on developing the conflict. it felt like the author was purposeful trying to make this book 500 some pages so they just thought “hmmm let’s add everything in that I possibly can” I’m not even joking. Fraternizing with the enemy is definitely out of the question, but what if the enemy is impossible to resist? When not writing, she's spending time with her husband and two children, reading, watching hockey (obviously), or enjoying the great Canadian outdoors. Please note: This listing is for the published, revised version of Offside only as there will be some substantial edits and changes. Because so much of the book was them in their happy phase, a lot of it read like we were just following along on their daily lives, little to no plot, character or relationship development. It’s not perfect - it’s self published so there were a few spots where the wrong word was used (‘it’ instead of ‘if’) but I was obsessed with our couple. I loved how he fell for Bailey first and afraid or shy about his feelings towards her And he was so patient and kind to her.
