About this deal

But for a seasoned whisky enthusiast like myself, it left me yearning for more. I longed for those moments when a sip of whisky transports you to another realm, gripping your senses with layers of flavours and an unmistakable character. Glendronach 19 yo 1995/2014 (54.1%, OB, for Vive la Vie, oloroso sherry puncheon, cask #78, 583 bottles) - 300817 Glendronach 23 yo 1990/2014 (52.3%, OB for Independent Spirit, Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon, cask #1374, 717 bottles) - 040615 On the finish, both whiskies received similar scores, with Macallan 12 scoring a slightly higher 5/10. The finish of Macallan 12 Sherry Oak was satisfactory but not particularly memorable or lingering. It did outperform the GlenDronach 12 by 2 points since it lingers more impactfully on the tongue. Unfortunately, the aftertaste can be a bit off-putting after some time. It boasts a complex and well-balanced combination of flavours, with notes of hot pastries, citrus peels, and sherried dried fruits. Compared to the GlenDronach, it offers significantly more depth for the experienced whisky lover to savour and explore. With Water: Several drops of water improves the chocolate notes (fudge), while also reviving the fresh fruits notes that had languished while sitting in the glass. The palate is fresher, the finish sweeter. I highly recommend trying this first without water, and then adding a little to see how it changes for you. Glendronach 19 yo 1995/2015 (55.1%, OB, Whisky Nerds, oloroso sherry butt, cask #2380, 628 bottles) - 310817

Honestly, I used to avoid Scotch whisky. I found it far too smoky for my palate, and thought it overwhelmed the more subtle flavors that would otherwise stand out in the profile. My opinion was that Scotch was for those who preferred classic and traditional to contemporary and cutting-edge. It wasn’t a negative judgement, as I fully understand and appreciate the value in a finely aged Scotch, and I do prefer more classic bourbon and rye, but as far as Scotch went, it simply wasn’t for me. Based on these scores, Macallan 12 Sherry Oak is the preferred choice. Its rich colour, complex palate, and overall flavour experience contribute to its victory. The whisky’s enticing aroma, satisfying mouthfeel, and well-balanced taste come together to create a captivating and immersive drinking experience. Glendronach 26 yo 1992/2018 (50.8%, OB, for The Whisky Barrel, sherry butt, cask #179, 638 bottles) - 230720 Glendronach 39 yo 1972/2011 (53%, OB for Shinanoya, Tokyo, oloroso, cask #717, 150 bottles) - 130212

The nose of The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak whisky is an intense and complex one. It opens with a vivid sweetness, with hints of sultanas, fresh apple blossom and sherried fruits. There are subtle floral notes at play, as well as notes of Calvados and tropical fruits. To compliment this sweetness, there is a layer of golden syrup that creates a unique balance to the aromas. Everything is perfectly interwoven and layered for something truly special. As with any good cask strength whisky, Batch 10 emits robustness and complexity, coming in at a powerful yet mid-level (for cask strength) brawn at 117 proof. Master Blender Rachel Barrie created The GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 10 from Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Spain and bottled the whisky at the natural cask strength – customary according to traditional methods from before the turn of the 20 th Century. It’s not that GlenDronach 12 is a bad whisky. Not by any means. On the contrary, it is meticulously crafted, showcasing the refined and approachable nature of a Highland single malt. GlenDronach 12 and Macallan 12 Sherry Oak both offer unique experiences for whisky aficionados to explore. GlenDronach 12 presents a sweet and spicy flavour profile with notes of cinnamon, ginger, and red fruits. It provides a pleasant aroma, making it a good choice for those seeking a shorter but pleasant dram at a reasonable price point.Nose: Piercing, delectable waves of fruit. All kinds of fruit. Dried, fresh, baked, jammed. It reminds me of a Trader Joe’s frozen pastry-and-custard dessert with mango and passionfruit we used to buy (“Torta Cotta”). In this glass there is vanilla custard, flaky layers of buttery pastry, layers upon layers of tropical fruits, and deeper in the glass are classic GlenDronach cocoa-and-caramel. Lovely, and assertive. This jumps right out of the glass, no need to dig.
