About this deal

Once the players had been subjected to the drudgery of the first version of the game, Magie would then introduce a second version of The Landlord’s Game that instead followed Georgist principles. The anti-monopolist, Georgist version of the game not only showed that land tax would stop one person running away with everything and leaving all the other players destitute at the end, it also had a more cooperative end goal - the win-state being when the player with the lowest monetary amount had double their original stake. If it’s not clear already, The Landlord’s Game is the Monopoly that we all know today. But there’s a good chance you may never have heard of Elizabeth Magie before today. She’s not credited as the original designer, and until the 1970s her design was almost entirely lost to the public eye. But how did this happen? She was a woman that believed in equality, a staunch feminist and political activist, as well as a believer in the principles of Georgism - the economic ideology developed from the writings of Henry George that was popular among some political theorists of the time. Georgists believe that instead of the standard method of taxation where a percentage is taken from income or capital or whatever source that comes straight from the work of those producing value in the economy, there should instead be a universal land tax that increases or decreases based on the usefulness, size and location of owned land in the state. Funfair certainly has all the good theme park building vibes going on that was present in its predecessor Unfair. The “take that” element present in Unfair has been removed. The gameplay has been streamlined and the game is now a family-friendly affair. The negative city cards have been removed as have the event cards. The resulting game is a fun and fair (sorry, couldn’t resist) game about building the best theme park. Think of a popular theme park building video game come to board game form. In general, Americans weren’t massive fans of being taxed. Georgism wanted to tax the value of the land itself across the country to fund the American government, after which any leftover funds could then be equally and fairly distributed among the citizens of the state. This was a pretty enticing system for a lot of progressive political leaders because it was seen to motivate land cultivation, it put money in the hands of those who had low socioeconomic standing and it got rid of the idea that landowners and landlords held all the power of the land that citizens used despite not really contributing to anything that was made on that land.

If at any time you don’t have enough money, you can always take out a loan. This doesn’t cost you an action. You can take out a maximum of four loans. Each loan you take out instantly gives you five coins but costs you ten victory points at the end of the game. This is a good way to get your Super Attraction at a discount—or even for free—but you still need to plan ahead to you can get the card’s full benefit for playing it. It certainly makes playing those cards easier, and when you’re new at the game and struggling to manage your money (I still struggle…), having that extra help is always appreciated. Or, you could go the Unfair route and just spend all your money on it without any help. Because pride. Next, you score all of your Blueprint cards. Gaining the points shown on the card for the basic requirement if your park matches what is listed on the card. If you complete the basic portion you can also score the bottom bonus section, if you also have all of the requirements listed for the bonus. For every Blueprint card where you didn’t meet the requirements listed in the basic section, you lose ten points. If you prefer not to have other players meddling in your affairs, then Funfair is probably more up your alley. However, if you love a game with more variety and the ability to mix games up from one to the next, Unfair is where it’s at. But now that you know the differences between the two, I’ll leave the final decision up to you. But watch out - your competitors may pay off the safety inspectors to close your rides or hire hooligans to vandalise your park! How will you get revenge?

There is always something to do on your turn and the fact the market cards are completely changed each round helps make the game feel different on each round. Over the course of 8 rounds, you play Event cards to help yourself and hinder your opponents, build Attractions and Upgrades using Park cards, and match your park to Blueprints. The internet is the same as I have seen people moan about the (unfairness) take that elements destroying players parks while they have spent all game building them only to be left in last place. I somewhat agree that this can be an issue but like we did in one game we only played the top half of the cards. small wording changes only, intended to clarify the intention, along with some updates of images (such as the Theme Overview cards) so that the graphics are all up-to-date. Changes include: Once everyone has completed their park actions, you move to the guest and cleanup stages where you calculate your income from guests and bonuses for the round as well as refresh the market with new park cards to buy. After the 8th round of play, players will score each of their attractions separately based on the number of icons present from upgrades, blueprints, staff points and any remaining coins they have. The highest scorer is the king of Unfair City! Must be This Tall to Ride We have not reviewed this game yet but we can tell you that this is a very fun park management game that is a great personal tableau game. You and other players are on a timeline and you need to play your hand to build up your park and make sure you are the biggest success. It is a very solid choice for this type of game.
