About this deal
Two thousand feet is often cited as the required height, but not always – and there is little consensus about anything else. Dawson focuses on hills and mountains of any height with a drop of 150m or more on all sides, thus prioritising relative height over absolute height.
It presents not only the most efficient routes for completing the Wainwrights as quickly as possible, but does so in such a way that each route is a fantastic walk or run in its own right. Collected together for no other reason than they were the favourites of Alfred Wainwright, a British walker, illustrator and author. So, the Wainwrights don’t necessarily have distinguishing characteristics such as all being above a certain height, however they are all mountains and they are all within Lake District National Park. For the truly intrepid, you can also combine the Munros with the Corbetts (Scottish peaks between 2,500ft and 3,000ft, with 500ft of drop on all sides), and the Grahams (Scottish peaks between 2,000ft to 2,500ft, with 150m of drop). Scafell Pike is also the nation’s greatest war memorial; a place of beauty and grandeur to pay tribute to fallen heroes. The unquestionable highlight is the view across Lake Windermere, which stretches sumptuously into the distance.
But too many tourists do it the wrong way, trudging uphill to WansfellPike – which isn’t actually the true summit – before boringly heading down the same way they came up. In 1919, the mountain was bequeathed to the nation in ‘perpetual memory of the men… who fell for God and King, for freedom, peace and right in the Great War’.This guidebook takes you on a thrilling journey with 45 expertly curated routes, each promising its own unique adventure. Wainwright's writing style is distinctive and charming, and his books have become enduring classics, loved by walkers and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. There are many versions of the round: extremely energetic hikers opt for up to 10 summits, but here we exclude Grasmoor and Wandope to complete a more than adequate eight Wainwrights in a single walk. Karen adds: "And you can run along the main ridge, the east-west ridge, and take a gentle route down.
