It may have a tablet screen designed for portrait orientation, but this is a computer that’s only really meant to be used in landscape. Having used the Onexplayer Mini for a little while now, it highlights a couple of things about this handheld specifically, but also the market in general. The first is that Windows performs an important role in how versatile this handheld is—apps that you know and love just run on it. Got an old emulator you want to try out? It'll take you seconds to see how it fares. Nvidia Frameview? No worries. GoG Galaxy, Epic Games, you name it, they all just work straight out of the box.

But when I reviewed the original OneGx1 (with a less powerful processor and inferior graphics), I was underwhelmed by those detachable controllers. I thought the computer made a decent mini-laptop, but a less-than-stellar gaming machine. Overall the scores are very good. We can’t do a direct comparison with other models as we are using different settings. But it is on par with the ONEXPLAYER 1S in comparison. The ONEXPLAYER is essentially another in the line of [Switch]-styled windows gaming handhelds that presents an opportunity to play AAA games on a handheld device. But by stuffing those guts into a handheld computer meant for gaming, adding a higher-performance cooling system, increasing the TDP, and adding a series of special function keys, One Netbook makes compact notebook parts feel like gaming PC parts… as long as you’re okay with playing games that don’t absolutely require a high-end discrete GPU.I wouldn't recommend for everyone as there is a bit of legwork required to get some games working on this, but when you do it's a great experience. Unfortunately, there are problems with the Onexplayer, with Windows 10 being an obvious weak link once you actually start using the device. Not utterly concept breaking, but despite its attempt to straddle multiple forms of input, Windows 10 still doesn't make for a silky smooth experience when it comes to touch or controllers. Forza Horizon 4 Forza Horizon 4 features hundreds of cars for you to tear across the British countryside with. Forza Horizon 4 showed that it isn't just about the framerate though, as there were glitches in the game regardless of the settings used. You'll also struggle to get some games running smoothly no matter how much you try tweaking them—Cyberpunk 2077 for instance did not make for a good experience, even at lower resolutions and graphical settings. The fact the Onexplayer is a full PC, with all the versatility and compatibility that comes with running Windows 10 ultimately works in its favour. Microsoft's OS can make for a clunky touch interface though, especially when you're just trying to get a game up and running, and it often doesn't feel like the premium solution it should be capable of. It does mean that the full wealth of PC gaming is open to you though, and that's probably worth having to jump through a few hoops to enjoy.
