About this deal

To that end she eagerly started a Law Degree only to find it so boring that she was at a very real risk of going completely insane. To mitigate this she started writing again. The second book got her an agent with Carolyn Whitaker of London Independent Books but, unfortunately, not a publisher. The third book, written during her first summer holidays off from university, found a home with Gollancz. The Ninth Circle came out in April 2008 with possibly the most beautiful cover ever created (matched only by her second book, Jasmyn). Get ready to travel to the iciest of mountains and to set sail across faraway seas with this fun, adventurous and absolutely spellbinding series about great feats, each book reading as a standalone story with its own set of unique and courageous characters.

Stella’s adoptive father, Felix, is a member of The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club, and Stella has always wanted to be an explorer as well. Technically girls aren’t allowed to join The Club, but when the chance arises to join Felix, Stella is determined to prove she can be as good an explorer as anyone.

Fancy an adventure, gang? Then follow us on a journey into an icy, magical expedition with the The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club. Sounds like the kind of present Aunt Agatha would give,” Stella said, immediately feeling glum again as soon as she said her name. Lacey-May: Alex Bell is a very intriguing author. The book includes the characters Stella Starflake Pearl, Shay, Ethan and Beanie. As well as this book, I also loved 'The Boy in the Tower' and 'Letters from the Lighthouse'Stella Starflake Pearl is desperate to be a famous explorer like her father, Felix. Just as Stella’s awful Aunt Agatha is about to whisk her off to a finishing school for young ladies, Felix decides that Stella MUST join him on his next expedition. Yay! You may not think of wolves as being magical, but these wolves are different. They can communicate with humans, in particular, with Polar Explorers’ Club member, Shay, who’s a wolf whisperer! Stella was found as a baby in the Icelands, a territory that is almost wholly unexplored. Now her adoptive father, Felix, a polar explorer, is returning to further explore the Icelands and Stella has been granted permission to accompany him - a high honour for a girl. Will she finally find answers to her true identity? She soon finds herself on an expedition to find the coldest part of the Icelands. But it doesn’t go to plan, as she and her fellow junior adventurers get separated from the group and have to find their way across the Icelands together. While the Icelands is full of incredible places and creatures to discover, it’s equally full of danger.

Brodie-Leigh: This book is full of cliff-hangers which make you want to read on. If you like books like 'Alice in Wonderland' you are sure to love this: the magic element draws you in and the adventure has you on the edge of your seat. This is a story full of friendship and love. I would definitely read read this again but the question still remains: will they return?

About Alex Bell

And if she wasn’t meant to be an explorer, then why had the fairies given her a middle name? Everyone knew that only explorers had three names. Felix had given her his last name, Pearl, but then hadn’t known what to do about a first name, so he’d asked the fairies to name her instead. This was probably a good thing, because Felix was fond of peculiar names like Mildred and Wilhelmina and Barbaretta. But the fairies had given her not one name, but two: Stella and Starflake. And surely that meant that she was absolutely destined to be an explorer. Stella knew she would never find out what had happened to her or her biological family, but the frozen wilderness out there had been her home once and she wanted to see it again for herself. Felix wasn’t particularly handsome or distinguished, and he didn’t sport a mustache, whiskers, or sideburns, as was the current fashion. This was in large part because those things required quite a significant time commitment in terms of grooming and maintenance, and Felix said he had (so far) counted up a total of 134 more interesting ways that he would rather spend his time, including making numbered lists of interesting ways he would rather spend his time. His nose was bent at the top, and Stella loved the way his eyes crinkled at the corners. His golden-brown hair was usually just a little bit too long, curling around his collar—and his mouth always wanted to smile. Felix didn’t like frowning. He said it was a waste of good muscle use.
