About this deal

We finished all the chapters by playing one of the songs again, they have played them at home too and it's so cool to see 30 little rockers bopping around the classroom to real music, played by real musicians, with real instruments! As well as his career as an author, by the age of 21, Tom had penned 10 UK number 1 singles and is the founding member of the band McFLY.

Combining my 3 favourite things: space, music and McFly, I was very excited to be delving into Tom Fletcher's latest writing project. However, when they are transported across the universe to another planet, they must play to save not just themselves, but also the whole of planet Earth. Tom heeft ervoor gekozen om de hoofdstukken niet te lang te maken, een ideale keuze voor de jongere lezer. When the prize is revealed to be tickets to a sold-out Max Riff and the Comets concert, even George's reluctant parents get involved to win the kids those tickets! The out-of-this-world new adventure from number-one-bestselling author of The Danger Gang and The Christmasaurus: Tom Fletcher.

Along with friends Bash and Neila, George prepares to play in his school's Battle of the Bands, despite their lack of confidence and talent. What will happen to the life from other planets when they are destroyed - where will those creatures belong? Amongst the McFly easter eggs and fascinating facts about space, the seemingly lighthearted story turns into a rather sweet tale about self-confidence, acceptance and celebrating differences. The imagination that went into the different types of aliens was impressive, as there were not only descriptions, images and names for each alien- there were names and descriptions of their home planets too! De afwisseling tussen tekst, tekeningen, strips, vergroot lettertype, en woorden die nog groter en vetgedrukt worden, zorgen ervoor dat je als surfend doorheen deze hardcover gaat. However, what makes this book stand out is the electric soundtrack that accompanies it, offering a great hook to encourage children to read with the promise of occasional music breaks. George wants them to be brilliant - but Neila has stage fright, and Bash is too distracted by his obsession with stars, aliens and faraway planets. It was still fun and I’m sure kids would be suitably entertained, but definitely the bottom of the list for me. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be exploring Fletcher's other work and considering how I can use his writing in the classroom.

It surpassed (some of) my expectations: the quality of writing itself turned out to be what I had expected, and it was a bit Diary of a Wimpy Kid at times (which I don't rate). I really liked the concept behind the story, especially given Tom's background being in McFly and his interest in aliens. As readers read the book, they will find QR codes which can be scanned to listen to a selection of brilliant SPACE BAND tracks online, which are performed by McFLY.If I read this to my class, I will make sure to read something of slightly higher quality too - perhaps some Roald Dahl!
