In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Hero Chao were a type of Chao inhabiting various regions of Mobius, most notably Chao Gardens. Chao could be turned into Hero Chao if they were raised by a virtuous person. Finally, Toy Island also produced a set of gels pens, including a neutral Chao topper (probably the same one as above). They will then evolve into an Angel Chao. One can evolve a Hero Chao into a type of Chaos Chao called an "Angel Chao". To get this kind of Chao, a Chao must be a Hero Chao that has already gone through two reincarnations. Once the Chao is on its third life, they will have to receive at least one of all the small Animals before the Chao has evolved to the second stage of its third life. They will then evolve into an Angel Chao.

In 2012, Monopoly released a Sonic the Hedgehog Collector's Edition! The game includes special Sonic-themed playing pieces (or tokens). One of these pieces is a little neutral Chao. It's very small, as you'd expect, so the details aren't great. This version of Sonic Monopoly is difficult to get a hold of today, as it's long out of production. In the console/ PC version of Sonic Generations, a Hero Chao is featured as a statue in the game's Statue Room. This image is from Sonic Team HQ. Hero Chao can usually only speak one word which is their own species' name. However, they have a very distinct form of communication: their emotion-dot. This dot floats above a Hero Chao's head and will change shape depending on what they think or feel: It becomes a heart when the Hero Chao is happy, a question mark when the Hero Chao is confused, an exclamation point when the Hero Chao is alarmed, and a swirl when the Hero Chao is unhappy. The only known Dark Chao plush from this era is the one to the left (from Sonic Team HQ), and one from the Tokyo Game Show for the launch of Sonic Heroes. The Neutral Chao is different to the SA1 Chao also. These were never available for sale. These are VMU straps! They feature SA1 characters, along with little Chao danglers! These are becoming more difficult to acquire. In Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the player can raise Chao into Hero Chao. In this game, one can evolve a Chao into a Hero Chao by feeding them Hero Fruit. A child Chao that is about to evolve into a Hero Chao will have its visual traits. Once they undergo their first evolution, the Chao will become a Hero Chao.In Sonic Runners, the standard Hero Chao make a few appearances throughout the game's story. In addition, the standard Hero Chao appears as a Normal Speed Type buddy which boosts all score elements. The game also features an Angel Chao buddy, which is called "Hero Chaos" here. This Chao is a S Rare Fly Type buddy that boosts the Rings acquired. While SA1 had the Neutral Chao and NiGHTS Chao, only the Hero Chao was made for SA2. This Hero Chao was only available in Japan and is also very hard to find now. There is an image for a Dark Chao plush seen on the web during the SA2 era but it was never for sale... In Sonic Runners Adventure, the standard Hero Chao does not appear. However, the game does include the Angel Chao variant (here called the "Hero Chaos"), which is featured as a buddy that gives the playable character a 50% chance of keeping all their Rings when taking damage. This Christmas jumper was an exclusive product for the UK and EU Sega Stores online. There are small Chao heads lining the bottom of the jumper. These badge sets were made for the summer season "Sega Online" 2019 random buy event. Basically, you'd send 500 yen to Sega and in return you'd get a random prize item, potentially one of these! The badges include 2 neutral chao, Cheese, and even a neutral run! It's nice to see some diversity.

In Sonic Racing, a Hero Chao is a part of the team of Chao (which also include Omochao, Dark Chao, and a Neutral Chao) on Team Rose that drive the Chao Pod.GE Entertainment is a licensed manufacturer of animation and entertainment merchandise, and produced official goods for Sega. In both the Wii version and Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Hero Chao appear as non-playable characters. These keychains were also released for Sonic Adventure 1 in Japan. The only English part of the box called them "Sonic Adventure Key Chin Figures" (note the typo). [1]
