About this deal

This winter has been decidedly cruel for the world of perfume. After the sad news of the death of perfumer and creator Vero Kern on December 18, 2018, we now heard of the passing of Jean-François Latty. Maturity, sovereignty, male warmth and irrepressible casualness. What Yves Saint Laurent has created is a glittering prism of masculinity. Brightly cool and yet so infinitely deep-warm. A rough shell and a soft core. Not a simple perfume. Jazz is a challenge for every man. But that's the way men are. Not always easy and easy to see through. And we gladly accept challenges! Or?

After 17 years of loyal service, he joined fragrance and flavor producer Takasago, where he created L'Eau Dynamisante and YSL Jazz.Just like Polo Green, the original Jazz leans more serious and mature, while being a very well blended composition especially in vintage form. A reliable pull year-round that simply just "smells good". No need to over think it and no wonder it is still in production since 1988. Though not a powerhouse, the longevity, is actually very good on my skin. During testing, I was able to get 9-10 hours of wear from this YSL cologne, without any issue. I was actually surprised that a newer batch, could still bring it with the performance. Jean-François Latty stayed there until the early 2000s, when he was whisked away by the house Téo Cabanel. In fact, bored by the industrial direction even the higher end perfumery brands were choosing at the time, he readily jumped into the niche universe, happy to be able to give free rein to his creativity in a small, exclusive house. He also founded his own perfume composition and raw materials company based in Grasse. I once had the chance to meet him there with the team of Téo Cabanel, and he was a lovely person, passionate about his job. L’Homme Ideal Cool boasts coolness in the form of a prominent mint accord that is sweet and bracing. This mingles excitedly with bergamot and orange, which creates a tart, fizzy freshness. Neroli, a staple of the classic Eau de Cologne, is given volume and lift by a swooping aquatic accord, together creating an energetic, weightless quality as accents of almond, vetiver and patchouli bring the signature core of the original into play. It’s THE perfect scent for summer 2019, especially if you’re the kind of guy who knows how to have a good time…

I'm a huge fan of YSL fragrances, until the last Y line. That line is a bit disappointing to me. But fortunately, I have many other YSL fragrances to enjoy, like this gem here. This, dear reader, I like to refer as my ‘scent snobbery’ phase and it’s one many of us go through. You see, when the door to the rabbit hole of perfume is opened, one is overwhelmed by an overflowing sweet shop of scent, and it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of wearing things that the hoi polloi haven’t even heard of. Pasha is a great performer and sits beautifully in the colder months of the years. Oakmoss and mint, give it a dry freshness, and then the caraway for some added spice. The scent warms up, while retaining its green outdoorsy depth, and the coolness of the mint. I'm not exactly sure what I'm smelling with this one as the progression through the notes is definitely unique (minty tobacco?), but with a name like Prestige, it must be some form of high quality art. Performance for both fragrances are very close and will last for the better part of 6-8 hours. Super high quality and very masculine in a classic Fougère way, but with a freshness that puts it apart from the other fougère offerings out there. I don't know why YSL decided to discontinued it but probably it didn't well in sales. In 2011 they re-lauched it in a different bottle but the formula changed and it seemed somewhat flat and watered down. I think it's now discontinued again or only available in some places.
