About this deal

Encourage them tell it to you in their own words, with some words or phrases from the story, using the pictures to help them. The book is best read aloud and appealing colourful illustrations include lots of details that children love to pick out when the story is being read. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. Mister Magnolia although a simple text, manages to include some more complex words that are made accessible by the colourful and active illustrations.

Although the ‘gag’ ending is popular at the moment, and almost entirely written by men in children’s publishing, here’s what’s true about joke climaxes: They’re funniest the first time. I have only read this to/with my children, but because of the message, it could be used to demonstrate how happy Mister Magnolia is, even though he only has one boot. Mister Magnolia is an entertaining rhyming book which explores the titular character’s journey of trying to find a second boot. What I really appreciate about stories Quentin Blake has both written AND illustrated himself: They are kinder than the stories he illustrated for Roald Dahl and Roald Dahl’s chosen successor, David Walliams. It seems really unfair that such a nice person as him has just one boot and cannot even ho utside outside on a rainy day.

Even though the book has a simple structure, it manages to include more complex words and thus, can be beneficial for an EYFS/KS1 setting. When Quentin Blake was creating Mister Magnolia at the end of the 1970s, there were still plenty of men in primary school teaching. This probably wouldn't have appealed to me so much if it wasn't for the enjoyment of those it was was read to. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. He is more fun than a child figure because of the comical juxtaposition: Like a hat wearing a dog, grown-ups don’t normally have this kind of fun.We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work.

So, the message that small thoughtful gifts are enough to make someone happy would be especially useful at Christmas and birthdays, even more so to children from lower income households that may feel guilty for not being able to afford presents for their friends. A fun picture book will very likely have a carnivalesque story structure, so that’s what I’m using here to analyse the story. We spend just as long reading the book as looking at the detail in the pictures, for example the expression on the face of the woman in 'Just look at the way he juggles with fruit! Mr Magnolia has many things, such as an old trumpet that goes rooty-toot, some very fat owls learning to hoot, a big purple dinosaur who's a magnificent brute, two sisters who play the flute, and even a swimming pool. Mister Magnolia by Quentin Blake is a fabulous EYFS/KS1 picture book to encourage rhyming by one of the world's most-loved authors and illustrators.I loved the story because it promotes positive attitude to life ,demonstrated by Mr Magnolia who may be with just one boot but still enjoys life. Other wits have noted that masculine stories emphasise the climax, while feminine stories emphasise the build-up. Using pens or paint and paper, children can make a picture of a favourite part of the story, show their picture to someone else and talk about it. If the cover showed him wearing only one boot, that would ruin the surprise of the opening page… in which we are told he wears only one boot. Quentin Blake has been illustrating poetry throughout the whole of his career, creating illustrations for such varied poets as Roald Dahl and William Shakespeare.

Grandmothers are exempt from female beauty standards, and the grandmother of The Witches does not conform to feminine expectations of behaviour.Mister Magnolia has many things, such as an old trumpet that goes rooty-toot, some fat owls, who are learning to hoot, a big purple dinosaur, who's a magnificent brute, two sisters who play the flute, and even a swimming pool with chute! Don't miss out on the amazing free Quentin Blake Exhibition at Weston Museum, running 4th March to 3rd June 2023.
