These are soft and very comfortable trousers indeed, slipping easily over my base layer, which I always wear after a bad experience with another brand I had while wearing heated kit directly against my skin. Keis certainly doesn’t recommend it, though on these I haven’t felt the heating elements through the shell fabric while riding, which applies even to the panels covering the knees. The front of the trousers is a soft-shell fabric that contains the heating elements; Keis calls this construction ‘Micro Alloy-Fibre Technology’, and the heating elements aren’t visible.

For the majority of conditions, layering-up will suffice.
