After a good dinner, I sit later relaxed behind my desk for write my second review today of my most gorgeous creation of Glenmorangie... But does experimentation risk compromising the Glenmorangie style? ‘You need to have something that is recognisable as the house character,’ says McCarron. ‘That apricot, peaches kind of gig that’s going on in there.

Malt Whisky Yearbook 2023

Glenmorangie claims that it is made as it always has been by the ‘16 men of Tain’ but one name more than any other is synonymous with the distillery today: the aforementioned Dr Bill Lumsden. He was the distillery manager from 1995 to 1998, and from then head of distilling and whisky creation for everything in the Glenmorangie Company’s portfolio. Under Dr Lumsden the cask finishes continued such as Sauternes barrel Nectar D'Or, Port cask The Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old and sherry-finished Lasanta 12 Year Old. He’s also been at the forefront of experimentation earlier in the whisky making stage with products like Signet made using chocolate malt, Cadboll made with single estate barley, and A Tale of the Forest which uses barley kilned with botanicals. The classic Glenmorangie style as epitomised by Glenmorangie 10 majors on fresh fruit like oranges and peaches burnished with sweet American oak. Whisky creator Dr. Bill Lumsden is fond of saying that “that the orangey is morangey in Glenmorangie”, as a way of communicating the core flavour profile and how to pronounce the distillery name. It remained under the same ownership for the next 90 years, but Glenmorangie still suffered from the ups and downs that plagued the industry throughout the 20th century. The American market was particularly important for Macdonald & Muir with their Highland Queen blended whisky, named after Mary Queen of Scots. Consequently, Glenmorangie struggled throughout Prohibition, which came into force in 1919, and the distillery closed in 1931, only to reopen in 1936. The latter begins not with Lumsden but, in the late 1980s, with ‘finishing’– the transfer of a mature whisky into a different cask type for an extended period of ageing. Even now, there are arguments about who ‘invents’ it, but Glenmorangie is the first to talk openly about it, and plumbs the possibilities of it beyond the Sherry cask.

I find Glenmorangie quite frustrating. It can be capable of some really good whiskies at times ( Glenmorangie Bacalta, Grand Vintage Malt 1990), and then there are those which are real wild cards, something that is a sharp contrast with the rest of the range. So far in our story our heroes (my wife, myself, my brother and sister in laws) have finally met up and the whiskies that have been tried so far were Glenfarclas 12 yr old, Yamazaki 12 yr old, Hakushu 12 yr old, Glenmorangie Nectar D'or and Amrut Fusion. Palate: Okay, wow. The vanilla bean comes on strong. It’s almost as creamy as vanilla ice cream, providing a decadently oily mouth-feel for such a relatively young spirit. Missouri oak does announce its presence, albeit politely, with cinnamon, allspice, and toffee. All of this blends harmoniously into a wood presence that “canes the tongue” like a saxophone reed–gently, and softly. Darroch, Valerie (24 October 2004). the name of the whisky is / ɡ l ɛ n ˈ m ɒr ə n dʒ i/ glen- MORR-ən-jee, [21] with the stress on the "mor" and rhyming with orangey (not */ˌɡlɛnmɔˈrændʒi/ GLEN-mor- AN-jee as it is commonly mispronounced). [22] Bottlings [ edit ] To keep from overpowering the single malt, the barrels made from these staves were toasted, compared to the traditional heavy char, and then filled with bourbon. The bourbon “donor” is undisclosed, but Glenmo works a lot with Brown-Forman so it could be a whiskey in that family. After four years in these toasted casks, the American whiskey was dumped and the barrels shipped to Scotland. Glenmorangie, which was perhaps among the first innovators of consciously tinkering with double maturations and finishes, today remains rather poetic about the wood. Yes, and I can tell you this is my most favourite Glenmorangie what I ever tasted yet. What Glenmorangie said that this dram have infleunces of crème brulee, it is. The nose tells me that there are a lot of spices, deep dark warm sweetness of roasted caramel and crème brulee. The taste is for me a bit strong but the tastefull sweetness comes fullbodied over. Tastes like vanilla, fruity as peach and orange, sugary and some citrus notes after. The finish is long but very complex, honey, menthol and anise like at the end.

The distillery is owned by The Glenmorangie Company Ltd (a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), whose main product is the range of Glenmorangie single malt whisky. Glenmorangie is categorised as a Highland distillery and boasts the tallest stills in Scotland. [4] It is available in Original, 18-, and 25-year-old bottlings, special cask bottlings, cask finishes, extra matured bottlings, and a range of special edition bottlings. Here is the crucial step in tasting whisky: Paradoxically, diluting the whisky doesn’t water down its flavor, instead, it opens up the spirit and releases even more nuances. Glenmorangie is transformed, and the spirit character we know today begins to emerge. Two steam-heated, eight-metre high stills – the tallest in Scotland to this day; shell-and-tube condensers, rather than worm tubs. The Astar is one of the few Glenmos that are bottled at cask strength. It is a vatting of so-called designer casks, from the Ozark Mountains. Astar is Gaelic for ‘the Journey’, referring to Dr Lumsden’s seach for these casks. They were are-dried for two years, heavily toasted, but only slightly charred. Despite the fact that there is no age statement on the bottle, insiders tell us it is around 10 years old. Anyway, enough lecturing, let us taste. We take a sip and to our surprise, even the texture of the drink seems to have changed—now with a smoother and creamier mouthfeel. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. I didn't cut this one with water, even though it was a much higher proof then the other whiskies as it didn't feel like it was needed. Very very enjoyable.
