The reader gains knowledge of this family's background, including the harm and suffering that have been inflicted upon them. It is such a well written book, with the characters being fully formed and believable, it had me rooting for the best outcome for them all.

Estranged from all of her family, blaming Grace for what has happened to her, it seems ironic that she suddenly reappears in all their lives. Were their circumstances the reasons for their mistakes or is it just their different personalities? Any mother or daughter will identify with many of the situations in this book and be encouraged by the final denouement.

For Alys, Grace’s daughter, Elin’s mother she has been constantly running from herself and has come close throughout her life to time running out. Grace is fast approaching her 90th birthday; the only thing on her mind is a reunion with Alys, the daughter she hasn’t seen for 30 years. Grace doesn’t want a traditional celebration for her birthday, but her granddaughter Elin has other ideas. This is a story about mothers and daughters: the love inherent in that bond and the heartache that miscommunication can bring.Widowed in her thirties, left to bring up a teenage daughter, Alys, she ran a boarding house with her friends John, and his sister Cassie for years until Cassie and John's ill-health forced them to move to a home where she visits them every day. This is a story of mother and daughter relationships, a bitter sweet tale that tells of heartbreaks, joy and forgiveness.

It is a joy-filled, life-affirming, sob-inducing novel – with characters you’ll come to know and love – from no.

The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact. Grace is eighty-nine, she’s proud and independent and enjoys an early morning swim in the sea, no matter what the weather. The reader learns the history of this family, and the hurt and pain that has been caused in the past. I fell in love with Grace, Elin, Beca (and Soozi) straight away, but it did take me a long time to warm to Alys. Female characters that cross over many generations always makes for a great read, and in this novel from Ruth Jones, her latest that is no exception.

PRAISE FOR RUTH JONES'Heartfelt, joyful, brave, utterly compelling' RACHEL JOYCE'I adored it' JOANNA CANNON'Joyful, life-affirming' ADELE PARKS'Beautifully warm and totally absorbing. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One's Gavin and Stacey , which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. The characters in this one generally are likeable accept Alys making me warm to the writing of her even more. Elin is busy organising a surprise birthday party for Grace and as usual it has got completely out-of-hand, exasperating both her husband Greg and Beca. Dennoch war es mir zu sprunghaft, der häufige Wechsel zwischen den Zeiten, auch wenn ich natürlich verstehe, und schon früh ahnte, dass der Rückblick am Schluss notwendig ist, um nicht schon alles zu verraten.
