About this deal

She wraps up with some life advice: "Joy is always waiting for us somewhere in life, even in our darkest moments and often in the most surprising of ways, and that embracing life in all its strangeness has so much good to offer .

One thing that did help was to spoil myself by doing something I really loved, like doing my photograph albums or going to a gallery. Lady Glenconner was born Lady Anne Coke in 1932, the eldest daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester, and growing up in their ancestral estate at Holkham Hall in Norfolk. is an interesting book about a wealthy woman whose family has associated for decades with the Royal Family. I felt bad for Princess Margaret when Anne wrote of how the press had to set up a "bad sister" to play against the Queen as "good sister. Now in her early 90’s she is very much enjoying her new life as an author, and touring to promote her books!

Obviously, most people don't have the resources to do this even if they wanted to, and Anne is aware of her "luck" in this regard. But Lady Glenconner’s storytelling ability is one that keeps your attention and I found I finished the book in a few days. Jill Murphy's brilliant tale, Whatever Next is an exciting space-themed story to share with your EYFS or KS1 class. There are two silly contradictions which I think the editor should have picked up on: first that in her first book she said she never laughed so much with anyone as she did with Princess Margaret whereas in this book she says the same thing about her friend (who was also her husband’s cousin) Susanna Johnston. The job was unpaid but included a clothes allowance and nice perks like tickets for Wimbledon and Ascot, and also lifetime membership of the Buckingham Palace NHS practice which, she says, makes getting her flu jabs more of an occasion. Her duties included warning their hosts what the Princess liked – plain food, gin and tonic before lunch, whisky and water in the evening, and don’t try to light her cigarettes because she preferred to do it herself.
