About this deal

Before we have covered the wars of Greece and Persia, the epic encounters of Salamis, Thermopylae and Plataea. Set a generation after his Athenian series, it follows Pericles' rise in Athens, the formation of the Delian League, and the Battle of the Eurymedon.

Do remember, this almost never worked for me, the only other books where I found this style working for me was for Dune by Frank Herbert and Paternus Trilogy by Dyrk Ashton, and if I may be honest, none of them did it as well as Iggulden in this book and hopefully series. The political intrigue is set against a number of horrific hand-to-hand combat scenes taking place in various areas of Greece. Who, by the way, is not shy about investing you in a character three books long and terminating them not in any way you would expect, but…oh, I did say no spoilers. It covers around eighty topics, from building a soapbox racer and tying knots, to learning about famous battles and how to make potassium aluminium sulphate crystals. In this one the focus is the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens, and the remarkable life of Pericles, the man who stood at the forefront of Athens.

It’s a confusing thing to determine which line is acceptable to cross/change when it comes to historical fiction! In 2010, media coverage emerged of a proposed film, Emperor: Young Caesar, about the early life of Julius Caesar, covering the years from 92 BC to 71 BC, and based on the first two novels of Iggulden's Emperor series, The Gates of Rome and The Death of Kings. But even during times of peace, the threat of Sparta - Athens's legendary rival - looms large on the horizon. The fourth and final volume in the acclaimed Emperor series, in which Conn Iggulden brilliantly weaves history and adventure to recreate the astonishing life of Julius Caesar. I truly think that Iggulden’s excelled as his characterizations of Temujin and his family in this book, especially for his brothers and parents; they are all so well-fleshed out characters with a personality that’s distinctive from each other.

A rousing retelling of a singular event, as seen through the eyes of three leaders on a momentous trek, this latest historical novel by Iggulden will be of interest to both young and old readers of military and ancient history. In each and every book/ series there will be times after I have read a book, when I will refer to the real history to find out more about the real people and events.Tim McInnerny] brings to life the action sequences with consummate skill, ensuring that the pace quickens to draw you in, without losing any clarity. As the drums of battle draw closer, can Pericles rise to victory once more--or will the world's greatest empire fall under his watch? Now they will be united again by a shock wave from the north, where a gladiator named Spartacus is building an army of seventy thousand slaves—to fight a cataclysmic battle against Rome itself. Emperor is an internationally acclaimed historical five-novel series about the life of Roman statesman and general Gaius Julius Caesar. He also explains how he has compressed some of the years and has omitted some ‘actions, skirmishes, insults and general breakdown of good relations between the two states and their allies.
