About this deal

Women—often referred to as ‘Land Girls’—were initially asked to volunteer to serve in the Land Army, but from December 1941 they could be conscripted to work on the land. By 1944, there were more than 80,000 women working long hours milking cows, digging ditches, sowing seeds and harvesting crops to feed the nation. Alternatives to air freight e.g. sea freight. Also opportunities to collaborate, learn, and scale impact through partnerships (e.g. the Sustainable Air Freight Alliance). New approaches or technologies could exclude women given that land ownership is often held by men, which in turn often confers decision making power with regard to farming practices. Alternatively, taking a WEE approach could enhance women’s roles as climate-smart farmers. This could be via improved access to inputs, credit, knowledge, and decision-making, coupled with reductions in unpaid care and domestic work. (See the following section on WEE and climate-smart agriculture).

Evan Wiig, director of membership and communications at the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (Caff) in California, said that he, too, has witnessed women farmers in California leading the charge through some of the state’s worst crises, whether it’s recovering from a fire or sharing tips about smart water practices and irrigation efficiency. Gender norms determine that men are often responsible for tasks with greater physical demands and/or in technical roles, whilst women are over-represented in lower paid jobs e.g. sorting departments, due to their perceived efficiency. New roles and green jobs e.g. fixing solar panels or irrigation systems, or transporting goods in electric vehicles, offer opportunities for career advancement for women farmer or changes to the gender division of roles or changes to the gender division of roles. Louisa Cox, Director of Impact at the Fairtrade Foundation said: “It takes two to grow cocoa, it’s a partnership crop that needs both the man and the woman to successfully see it through to harvest. Yet often the woman does two thirds of the work for less than a third of the income, meaning a bitter taste to the sweet treat. Time spent on unpaid care and domestic work poses a barrier to education, including learning new climate-smart practices to mitigate against climate change impacts. In other studies increased time spent on domestic chores due to climate change has also been associated with girls being taken out of school to help families, exacerbating gender inequalities in education levels. According to the Office of National Statistics, in 2018 about 17% of farmers were women, up from 7% in 2007-2008. In higher education courses, women agricultural students now outnumber men almost two to one, making up 64% of the 2017-2018 graduates. The Cheshire College of Agriculture was opened in 1921 to provide courses in agriculture—initially just for men, but female students were admitted from 1926 and a dairy department was built soon after. Many agricultural schools and colleges were used for training the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War. During the pandemic, for example, Joseph said women farmers filled “the gaps in local communities for food access”. Radical Family Farm stepped in to feed food-insecure seniors throughout the Bay Area when it was not safe for them to go to the grocery store or farmers’ market. Reduction in emissions for in-farm transport: elimination of the use of diesel and petrol for in-farm transports. Within the Kenyan context, alternatives such as biofuels and electric vehicles remain limited to date. In her dissertation about women farmers for Utah State University, published in 2019, Ennea Fairchild wrote: “Not only are women making up at least a third of those in most agricultural fields, but … their numbers are continuing to grow, with women increasingly becoming involved in all aspects of agriculture.”

Miro Forestry is a sustainable forestry and timber business with plantations in Ghana and Sierra Leone. While the majority of jobs are currently on plantations, as the business expands, most new jobs will be in harvesting and processing. British International Investment (formerly CDC) supported Miro Forestry to perform a gender workforce diagnostic and adopt a gender action plan. The diagnostic revealed key opportunities for Miro, which led the company to set a target to increase the number of women in the workforce from 26% to 40% over the next two years. Miro has also introduced a series of specific initiatives to advance women’s employment and leadership, including mentorship and upskilling. A gender gap in access to and control of assets, including land, machinery, credit and digital technologies, is contributing to this. Leadership, assets and credit
