About this deal

He has lived all over the place, including England, Mexico, Lichtenstein and Monaco, and he lived in Antibes for the last years of his life. One day Fritha, a young girl from the nearby village, brings him a snow goose wounded by a gun shot.

He wrote over forty books, four of which were the adventures of Mrs Harris: Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (1958), Mrs Harris Goes to New York (1959), Mrs Harris, M. She agrees, though she knows it could be dangerous for her to carry a letter written in Russian and give it to a Soviet citizen. All sorts of complications eventually arise, especially once they realize their status and Liz becomes involved, much to her own peril. This 1970s farce has a simple premise - cleaning lady Mrs Harris and her friend Violet win a trip to Soviet Russia. With a mink coat in mind for Mrs Butterfield, she also hopes to use their 'oliday to reignite a lost romance between her lovelorn employer and a Russian woman he had loved years ago. I’ve just seen an advert for Chichester Festival’s musical of Flowers for Mrs Harris, and thought of your blog immediately! The attitude to the Russians is totally out of date, as is the Cold War angst, but I remember those days well, so I could understand Mrs.

Ever the loyal servant, however, Mrs Harris (accompanied by her loyal friend Mrs Butterfield) believes it only right that others benefit from her good fortune as well. The classic satirical novel'Mrs Harris is one of the great creations of fiction - so real that you feel you know her, yet truly magical as well.

When, much to her surprise, she wins a trip for two beyond the Iron Curtain, she has no idea of the adventure that lies ahead of her. Rhyader sets sail for Dunkirk to help rescue the trapped soldiers and soon the tale of the man with the snow goose is passed from one soldier to another. I guess the fact that the author is actually American explains the language in these books, which are peppered with far more bloodys than the characters they depict would likely have used. As was the real-life fate of too many couples caught in such East-West relationships, the Soviet authorities would not let Lizabeta leave the country. It’s of its time , maybe a little old fashioned attitude that wards women and class BUT it was an easy read , delightful, uplifting and great characters in a lovely imaginative plot. Mrs Harris is one of the great creations of fiction - so real that you feel you know her, yet truly magical as well. My daughter and I loved the film and I usually enjoy the original book version of the story even more. When your choice of fiction is influenced by where it is set, then you can end up reading novels that you would not otherwise have given a second glance to. See the Golden Carriage in the Kremlin, the mummy of the great god Lenin and the relics of the Czar.

She was genuinely moved by the sight, moved to murmer, ‘Cor blimey, but ain’t it beautiful,’ and felt suddenly glad that she had come. Mrs Harris wins a trip to Moscow and invites her friend to accompany her which she does reluctantly. Unfortunately, the discreet passing of documents is an activity which can land even the most well-intentioned charlady in hot water with the KGB. J. Marsh, Judith O'Reilly, Kelly Clayton, Kim Nash, Leah Mercer, Liz Fenwick, Louise Jensen, Louise Mumford, Malcolm Hollingdrake, Marcia Woolf, Mark Stay, Marcie Steele, Natasha Bache, Nick Jackson, Nick Quantrill, Nicky Black, Patricia Gibney, Rachel Sargeant, Rob Parker, Rob Scragg, S. Harris wins a trip for two to Moscow and hopes to help one of her clients, who is in love with a Russian woman.I haven't read the two installments that follow, but from what I gather they were also very good, most likely stronger than this one. Russia in Fiction claims no special expertise in the literature of the prolific Paul Gallico (1897-1976), whose output of over 50 books ranged from The Poseidon Adventure, which was made into a blockbuster disaster movie, to children’s books much loved by Harry Potter author, J. Nancy Mitford wrote a short diary of her time in Russia, it’s in The Water beetle if you fancy another look at Russia. The indomitable Mrs Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich. I continue to be fascinated by the extraordinary range that Gallico has in his writing, from dark to frothy, poignant to funny, and (indeed) very good to not at all good.
