About this deal

Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. See how we test. When Rosmadi @Sennheiser handed over the HD 25 ALUMINIUM to me, he specifically mentioned that this is just a minor update Anniversary Edition, and that though there is an improvement gained from applying the Aluminum housing, the difference is marginal. Well that was to be expected, given the fact that everything else is the same except for the application of Aluminium for the housing material — following the footsteps of the Amperior. Based on his comment, I told him right there that I probably can’t write much about the headphone as I don’t think that there is much to be talked about and he understood and gave me the nod.

There aren't many included accessories to talk about—the detachable cable is the only one the headphones ship with. It terminates in 3.5mm, so there is a ¼-inch adapter for pro-gear and stereo receivers. Aside from that, there's a soft, zip-up carrying case, and that's it. For the price, the HD 25 Aluminum seems a tad light on the accessories—an extra cable, perhaps one with phone controls so that this pair can be used easily with mobile devices and not just professional settings—would've been a nice touch. The earpads are removable and replaceable, but no extras ship with the headphones. I still think that this should be a short article but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t let my excitement show. The excitement right from the first time I listened to the 25 ALU, it’s like first love to the HD25 all over again. Yes the difference is slight, but boy, the improvement produces the legendary HD25-1 sound and makes it even better. For those of you familiar with the DT770 LE review, this review is pretty much going to take on the same tone. There is more to this anniversary editions, it seems, and I wouldn’t be surprised if like Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser suddenly decided to make this a standard, non limited product on their line up. The HD 25 Aluminum's first victory is its audio performance, but a close second is the simplicity of its design. A removable cable (with no phone controls) detaches from both ears—so the user chooses which earcup is left and which is right. Soft, supra-aural (on-ear) earpads and the well-cushioned underside of the headband make for an exceedingly comfortable fit. Market-leading studio headphones delivering great sound, sumptuous comfort and a well-balanced response.

This saying is not technically exactly correct but for every day use use of dynamic microphones you will not find gain limitations. At SPL levels above 160 dB some mechanical problems might occur (for example the voice coil might crash onto the magnet) but these SPL levels are very hard to find in real world.

If the headphones have sound in only one ear or differing sound levels in each ear or the sound in general is not what you expected then it needs to be determined where the issue lies - with the headphones or with the audio source. Here at Sennheiser we use dynamic microphones for distortion measurements on loudspeakers at very high sound pressure levels. At Sennheiser we have measured the SPL and THD inside a large 2" driver/horn combination with a MD 421. The max SPL this combination was able to produce was 150 dB and the THD level recorded by a MD 421 was below 1% (produced by the driver not by the mic) Bass is now fuller and hits lower. Midrange is more refined, and while the HD25-1 treble has sounded a bit harsh compared to the newer headphones, the ALU makes a big improvement on that. I’ve been raving about the Vmoda M100, but it seems that the ALU is Sennheiser’s answer to the M100. I don’t even think they know they have such a big winner in their hands here, as I don’t hear them talking that much about the ALU. Notable design decisions include the return of the sturdy steel cable which far beats the flimsy cables of the Amperior. The pads are also very much improved. Rather than the soft but brittle alcantara soft leather, Sennheiser now uses a much better quality, softer faux leather than the one found in the standard HD25-1. Likewise the headband pads also use the same leather. The first thing to do is ensure that you have the audio plug of the headphones connected securely into the audio device. A properly connected cable should not wiggle. If the plug wiggles that could indicate a loose connection. NOTE: This could be a result of the cable not being plugged all the way in or it could be a faulty input or sometimes if the device you are connecting to has a case on it the case will prevent the cable plugging in correctly. So as a conclusion we can state the MD 421 has no maximum SPL limitations for practical use. However if using dynamic microphones at high SPL levels a user should be aware that the very high voltage (up to several volts) delivered by the microphone might cause problems when connected to mic preamps.
