About this deal

Sin dudas una visión romántica de un mundo que ya no existe Musashi es simple y llanamente excelente. Of course, one can expect that when comparing a novel to a manga, but still, here the characters and story acquire so many different dimensions it's mind blowing. The book of Five Rings, Translated by William Scott Wilson, who translated the next book, is authored by Miyamoto Musashi himself. On his way home, he commits a rash act, becomes a fugitive, and brings life in his own village to a standstill—until he is captured by a weaponless Zen monk. Through Takuan’s guidance, Takezo transforms into Musashi, a skilled warrior who is determined to become the best swordsman in Japan.

In effetti mi mnancava qualche mattone classico fuori dal continente europeo, e il Giappone mi ha sempre affascinata. I am usually not bothered by a book being so long, but in this case it became quite a trudge through the second half of the book. The world of the Edo period in Japan seems real and tangible here because of the extremely simple and modern translation into english. Hope Spot: Musashi reunites with Jōtarō and Otsū, allowing the former to resume his training and giving the latter a chance to talk him into being with her.

Musashi stealthily slips past the outlying members until he is within range, whereupon he jumps out, declares the fight started, and, ignoring most of the retainers, slashes his way toward the terrified child and kills him. This is James Clavell's tour-de-force; an epic saga of one Pilot-Major John Blackthorne, and his integration into the struggles and strife of feudal Japan. He wanders around Japan training young pupils, getting involved in feuds with samurai and martial arts schools, and finding his way through his romantic life.

He also learns the importance of love and friendship, which help him find a sense of purpose and belonging. Being an enormous fan of the manga Vagabond I decided to read Eiji Yoshikawa's version on Musashi, and I have to admit that story-wise the novel is way better than the manga. Not only do we get to learn firsthand about Musashi's thoughts and actions it also delves into his many friends and enemies so by the end we have a pretty well rounded view of the characters in this world. I'm Standing Right Here: After Musashi's last fight with the Yoshiokas, Kojirō denounces him to a crowd of people. Mundane Utility: In the final third of the novel, Musashi's development shifts from focusing on martial development through duels to focusing on ways to apply the Way of the Sword to situations and settings outside of the battlefield.Diabolus ex Machina: After the duel at Ichijoji, Musashi and Matahachi meet up and reconcile, with Matahachi appearing to realize how foolish he's been throughout the novel. While this is ostensibly the story of Musashi he is often absent from the pages for extended periods of time (seemingly deserting the reader as he does the other characters in the story). Blood Knight: Musashi and Kojirō have shades of this, but Musashi is mainly focused on becoming a master while Kojiro will often pick a fight for self-aggrandizement or because he gets a sadistic pleasure from winning. After a failed battle, Takezo is left for dead, but he manages to survive and is forced to flee to the countryside. However, the bullheaded matriarch of Matahachi's family, Osugi, simply will not accept that her son's disappearance is not Musashi's fault and pursues him with the intent of killing him and restoring her family's honor.

This room can be the wellspring of enlightenment, the same fountain of knowledge found and enriched by sages in the past. Thus while we see one man’s attempt to achieve the ideal represented by bushido the story acknowledges the harsh truths that were all too often the reality. There is plenty of action, and adventure, however what surprised me the most was how witty and humorous the book is throughout. If you master the principles of sword-fencing, when you freely beat one man, you beat any man in the world. Although it is an entertaining read and I did gain some inspiration from it, I found it really missed the depth you'd expect from such a saga. In doing so, he also shows us what the pure feminine feels and looks like and how overpowering it is in its subtleness and beauty: Otsū. I see all sorts of familiar tropes here, characters and themes I recognize out of Saturday morning karate movies by way of Kurosawa.
