About this deal

I became aware, from experience in Grimethorpe at the time of the pit closures, how seriously the decimation of industrial opportunities in this area affected not only men and boys, but equally the women and girls. Faced with far fewer opportunities and the increasing influence of media concentration on celebrity status frequently results in a negative reaction to both education and ambition. You only have to walk around our community and speak to the people who make it so special to know that holds true. When you walk through our town, you are walking through a chronicle of our past – lessons in who we are, voices reminding us of what we have achieved, inspiration for generations to come. I do also want to say a word about the Platinum Jubilee – truly a milestone in our nation’s history.

That suffering will live long in the memory but so too should the resolve of those who pulled us through – our NHS I strongly believe that identifying and engaging people who have achieved something in their own lives is now more important than ever. For youngsters to hear someone, who had greater obstacles than they personally face, say – “Well I did it – so why can’t you!” Now an educational consultant and speaker on the Arts in Action from Grimethorpe to Hollywood, her previously published work includes a range of diagnostic/support strategies, All for Barnsley, Barnsley & Beyond and involvement in a number of community books including The Bus to Barnsley Market and the Grimethorpe Book in a Day. A Barnsley miner's daughter, Mel Dyke is a former bank clerk and Consumers' Association lecturer who completed Sir Alec Clegg's mature student teacher course. From 1973 she was employed at Bretton Hall College and then the University of Leeds as an education lecturer and link tutor.

I hope everyone knows what an enormous privilege it is for me to represent our community, and how seriously I take that responsibility. From the First World War to the Second, to the Falklands and every other conflict beyond, Barnsley’s men and women have consistently stepped forward to answer the call. Romero Communities – a wonderful organisation, who have provided invaluable support to countless people in Barnsley.

The challenges we face today and those we face tomorrow are daunting but like the challenges of yesterday, they will be overcome. In every direction, there is much to do. Just as we emerge from a health crisis, we have entered an economic one. Families facing hardship, businesses facing uncertainty. And Hey! – who do so much for our children and young people suffering with their mental health by providing the care they need when they need it most. Mel Dyke is an incredibly passionate champion for the area. Her books ‘Barnsley and Beyond’ and ‘Grimethorpe Revival’ are so important in remembering the past and in helping future generations.

Just outside, we have our square dedicated to the Barnsley Pals battalions. Men who stepped forward to answer the call during the First World War. It’s our tribute to those no longer with us, to those who lost loves ones and to those working-class heroes who sacrificed so much to keep us safe.
