Interior paddles: The Tefal model we looked at has an interior paddle – its stirring motion keeping the food moving around a doughnut-shaped tray. Top tip: Watch out for those that will require you to part-boil the cut potatoes prior to crisping – air-fryers worth having should be able to fully cook chips on their own. Some on our list, such as the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer, are actually multi-cookers, giving you multiple appliances in one, including a slow cooker or dehydrator as well as an air fryer.

We found the browning to be a little inconsistent when air-frying salmon and chicken breasts, and our aubergine – while flavoursome – lacked the restaurant-style grill marks we were hoping for. It is large, making it one for bigger kitchens, but its 10-litre capacity is ideal if you frequently feed a crowd.In fact, this increasingly popular appliance can cook everything from chicken to cupcakes (and much, much more) in a few simple steps, making it a great multi-purpose gadget to have in the kitchen. Do you like to choose your own temperature and how long to cook things for, or would you prefer to leave all that to the machine? We set a small chicken in one drawer and raw chipped potatoes in another to cook thanks to practical depth and only needed to shake the chips midway, leaving you free to continue with other cooking tasks.

The cooking results, too, were excellent – both thick and thin-cut air-fried chips were a success, as was a deliciously crisp duck breast, which cooked at 180C for just 15 minutes. On test, it delivered delicious chips and scored perfect marks for its fairy cakes, although we were unable to bulk bake as we could only fit five in at a time. Its controls were intuitive and easy to use – a single knob lets you switch between all the different settings – something our testers found useful. After a brief flick through of the manual we were able to get cooking pretty quickly thanks to the easy set up.The outside of the appliance stayed cool during cooking and, overall, it was easy to use thanks to clear instructions and recipes. That said, this is worth investing in if you’re only looking to cook for one or two and need a multi-tasking machine to save on storage space. Its grill function didn’t disappoint when it came to grid cooking and, if you like a traybake, cakes are ready in 25 minutes. As well as roasting, their extra air-frying functions circulate hot air around the food for more efficient crisping.
