About this deal

It’s a deeper, darker, more forbidding area of the (already pretty deep, dark, and forbidding) region in which the current season of Underworlds is set in. Warhammer Underworlds: Nethermaze Review – What’s New Compared to the Warcry models, the Shadowborne don’t bring many new ideas, it’s really more of the same. Still, as a fan of anything with pointy ears I like the new models a lot. With only four models they are a nice little painting project, especially Slythael with her cloak and crystal weapons. Fun factor

Amongthe set’s 48 new Universal cards, there are 16 gambits, 16 upgrades, and 16 objectives – of which the handful that most jumped out at us (from first riffles through) are: The Nethermaze rulebook is your one-stop port-of-call for all the latest rules for playing Warhammer Underworlds. Nethermaze is another faithful – albeit perhaps a little predictable – entry into the annals of Warhammer Underworlds history. Whilst on paper the contents of this box are very similar to those that have arrived in other Underworlds boxes of a similar price, there’s enough fresh and new stuff in here to keep Underworlds fans happy.Soulrender Elathain Ill-fated and his gaggle of companions – including the champion crustacean Duinclaw – head to the battlefields of the Mortal Realms. Elathain’s Soulraid is led by Elathain himself and joined by his sworn Ishlaen escort Fuirann, his Namarti thrall Tammael, and the bond-beasts Duinclaw and Spinefin. Hedkrakka’s Madmob There is a lot, though. As I discovered when I played the Harrowdeep box, getting through my first game of Underworlds as a newcomer to the rules can feel like a bit of a slog. There’s still lots of stuff that needs to be done and an awful lot to remember when playing Underworlds, so even though the rulebook isn’t massive, there’s still a lot of information in it that will take some time to get to grips with. Rumours abound of powerful relics to be found in the ever-shifting labyrinth known as the Nethermaze, located in the deepest layers of Harrowdeep. At Morathi-Khaine’s command, the penumbral Shadeborn venture into the darkness to find remnants of the shadow magic used to construct it – but little do they know the devious Clans Eshin have their own schemes afoot.

In the image below, the hex-shaped counters on the left are either gloom hex tokens, double-sided scatter tokens, or double-sided feature tokens. The silver and gold tokens in the top centre are glory point tokens. The square tokens on the right are Move/Charge tokens and Guard/Stagger tokens. The red counters and counters with gemstones on them are wound/generic counters. The little tokens with the Underworlds logo on them are activation tokens, and the final pile in the bottom-right corner are Raise tokens. Kixi-Taka the Diviner is blessed by his Slann masters, and makes use of esoteric Old One technology to lead the Starblood Stalkers into battle and usher along the Great Plan. Two skinks join forces with Otapatl the Chameleon Skink – and that taciturn mass of scale and muscle known as Klaq-Trok. The duardin of the Mortal Realms are a proud but divided people who hold certain shared legends in common – including an aged traveller, a wanderer whose timely arrival will avert calamity and right intractable wrongs. Grombrindal: Chronicles of the Wanderer follows the legendary White Dwarf as he travels around the realms, meeting his people. We’ll have a closer look at everything in just a moment. Warhammer Underworlds: Nethermaze Review – LiteratureAgile and super-fast-moving, these insidious rat-men are laser focused on killing the enemy leader(s), with assorted ways to outmanoeuvre and/or Stagger and mob their foes, on the way to their true prize. Meanwhile, sports fans can enjoy Blitz Bowl Ultimate Edition , a smaller six-a-side version of Blood Bowl. Each warband provides its own painting challenge, with a hatful of highly-detailed miniatures to get creative with. The Warhammer TV painting team has come up with a collection of paints for each warband to help you get them ready to enter the Gnarlwood. Way of the Lashing Tail– Skaven never fight alone if they can help it; this two-glory objective card scores when you have three fighters adjacent to the same enemy fighter. Nethermaze’s new Grand Alliance cards include three gambits, three upgrades, and three objectives for each of the four Alliances – here are a few of our early favourites:

That said, as seasoned modellers ourselves, we suspect newcomers mighthave a stressfultime putting these together. While it’s nothing short of wizardry to produce modelsthis acrobatic-lookingthat can be assembled without glue, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily easy to build, or that you can’t very easily bend or break a few spindly bits. It seems like it was only a few weeks ago I was reviewing Harrowdeep, the last Underworlds set that also heralded a new season of the game. Now, we enter Season 6 of Underworlds with another collection of new miniatures, new cards, and new rules. They really don’t scrimp on tokens in these Underworlds boxes. There are dozens of little cardboard circles, squares and hexes in the Nethermaze box, spread across two boards. I’ve done a bit of digging, and as far as I can tell there are no real great changes. Nethermaze is the first new season box to be released for Warhammer Underworlds since GW switched from making annual season releases for the system to releasing new seasons on a six-month rotation. Perhaps, then, it’s not hugely surprising that there aren’t that many changes to the game’s rules.Regular readers will know that Lizzie absolutely hammered me when we had a go with the Harrowdeep set (and I’m still not over that useless bird the Stormcasts have on their side), so I’ve got a score to settle this time around. Set Up I’ve always been quite impressed with the Underworlds rulebooks. On the whole, Warhammer rulebooks have a habit of being a little bit, shall we say, overawing. They can be extraordinarily jargon-heavy, long-winded, and have to explain key concepts and rules to the Nth detail that can leave players feeling confused and frustrated. The print on these boards is excellent. Each one is unique yet fits the underwater theme perfectly. Hexes are clearly outlined, as are the various icons on each, which will make playing the game all the easier. Tokens All is Shadow– A meaty three-glory objective card that scores when all your fighters are in enemy territory, and two or more are skulking in a Cover Hex or an Edge Hex.
