The Enigma of Garlic - Goodreads Carolyn Walsh ’s review of The Enigma of Garlic - Goodreads
I read this book on my British Isles vacation and, while in Edinburgh, stayed in the "New Town" and visited Scotland Street and ate dinner at the Cumberland Bar. It’s the most anticipated, and perhaps controversial, event of the decade—Lou and Bob’s wedding—and everyone is invited. What we once found charming and refreshing, seems a bit much now with three series, all with similar themes, but different settings. Bruce's metamorphosis and new-found outlook on life is put to the test as he prepares to leave his creature comforts for the monastic simplicity of Pluscarden Abbey. And he had borne so much in his brief seven years that a little more would not make much difference.
Another enjoyable, meandering, philosophical, barely plotted, semi-pointless outing amongst the denizens of Edinburgh. When you are with somebody you love the smallest, smallest things can be so important, so amusing because love transforms the world, everything. His house sitter, meanwhile, gets a little too comfortable in his new life and discovers that the talented Bruce Anderson’s shoes are all too easy to slip into.

The dreaded Irene is back, Bertie is just too nice, someone seems to be having an affair, and a nun busies herself with espionage. Perhaps she was right when she said that he would, in due course, have to marry her; perhaps that was his unavoidable destiny, decreed by some indifferent Fate somewhere, perhaps even by the planets in their unchangeable rotations.
