About this deal

His is a wonderfully evocative book, creating a sense of place and invoking the power of literature and nature.' The Guardian For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with ghost stories. Then to see that this book hooked stories of ghosts with American history, I was ready to engrossed with this book. The author was obviously inspired by Jurassic Park, so you can probably figure out what happens from there. But you see, the carnage is just the beginning. Ghostland was first shown in competition on 3 February 2018 at the Festival international du film fantastique de Gérardmer. [5] [1] [12] Ghostland won three film awards at the festival, including the Grand Prize, Audience Award, and the SyFy Award. [12] [13] The SyFy award was chosen by five bloggers at the festival. [13] Frédéric Strauss of Télérama noted that this was the second French co-production in a row that dominated the awards at the festival with the previous years big winner being Raw by Julia Ducournau. [7] The film received a theatrical release in France on 14 March 2018. [6] In some territories, the film was released as Ghostland and in others as Incident in a Ghostland. [14] Reception [ edit ]

The author posits that ghost stories are malleable, changing throughout the years to accommodate society's various needs: a b Harvey, Dennis (21 June 2018). "Film Review: 'Incident in a Ghostland' ". Variety. Penske Business Media . Retrieved 26 June 2018.

The park, and the ghosts inside, have other plans for opening day that involve an unexpected virus, many deaths and complete chaos. Ben is excited most of all as Ghostland is centered around horror author, Rex Garrote, who had died in an unique way and who had also lived in one of the most haunted houses in America. So Ben is really psyched to be able to explore the theme park and he just wants to delve deep into all the exhibits. The latest? GHOSTLAND--a theme park that utilizes special eyewear to allow visitors to view the various "attractions" showcasing the last moments of actual ghosts.

What comes to be known as the "Ghostland Disaster" is just the beginning for Ben and Lilian. His spirit finally set free, Rex Garrote declares war against the living. He'll use the psychic trauma of the Ghostland mass murder to tear open a dimension between the mortal and ethereal worlds known as the Dark Rift, and unleash its legion of nightmare creatures upon anyone who refuses to kneel before him. The format seemed a little over the place too. The chapters weren't focused on one thing and one area of the country it just jumped around. The only thing that was organized was that it went with one part being about graveyards, parks and another on hotels etc. But I think those could have also been spread out more and more organized by area like I already mentioned.

Summary

We live in an old house with creaky wood floors and doors that don’t quite fit into their frames anymore. Thus, as day settles into night, there are noises galore. I’ve stopped counting how many times I’ve been sent downstairs by my wife (weapon-free, mind you), to see if anyone is breaking in. (It’s never been fully explained what I’m supposed to do if someone actually is breaking in). Native Americans are mentioned but only as a source of anxiety rather than a people with their own set of ghosts. There's no talk of the countless Chinese and Irish immigrants who died building the railroads. No discussion of the Japanese incarcerated during World War II. So when the author says America is haunted by its history, he's talking about, and to, a very specific color of America, with a very limited sense of the horrors this country has inflicted, on others and itself.

I learned a lot of quirky, historical details about the United States. For example, did you know that Spiritualists were a huge part of the suffrage movement?: "Early suffrage meetings were heavily populated with mediums and trance speakers; in some places it was difficult to find suffragists who weren't also Spiritualists. Spiritualism had given many of these women practice and confidence in speaking to groups with authority; by allowing others (the dead) to speak through them, American women began to speak for themselves in greater numbers. Spiritualism was only one of many factors and social movements that drove women's suffrage, but it was a vital and important one." loc 961-978, ebook.

So, if you are looking for a scary, chilling group of ghost stories to enjoy at Halloween, this may not be the book you are looking for. But, if you are interested in learning the history behind these alleged hauntings and seeing how the author discovered the truth about them, then you will find this book to be quite interesting indeed.

I was not necessarily looking for a book that explained "hauntings" or took a biased opinion one way or the other. In fact I'm not sure why I read this but it was fairly enjoyable. Even the author Duncan Ralston mentions this in his afterword about hoping he got the technology correct or that it worked for the reader. I can definitely tell Jurassic Park was a big inspiration for this and I found some similarities to Thirteen Ghosts (from 2001) as well. Ralston brings the big guns in this coming of age/horror novel......combining the movie 13 Ghosts and the novel Hell House with epic results. The scenes at the theme park were further added to by an "index" where the readers can look up all the grisly details of each ghost on display. Of course, the vast majority of these specters were the worst villains and murderers mankind had to offer. Exposure therapy has never been so intensive! “What’s the worst that could happen, right?” You do realise you’re one of the main characters in a horror novel, don’t you Lilian?
