All games have a couple levers, in the form of player count and the actual players you sit down with, and the different personalities they bring. The dynasty that becomes the most impressive as well as pleasing the Gods will gain the most VP and be crowned the winner. And thankfully there’s a variant in the rules for new players which walks you through the scoring quite early in the game; I’d certainly recommend using it – a fabulous innovation. Concordia: Digital Edition is a turn-based strategy game where 2 to 6 players face each other in the fight for wealth and influence. The developers do have a Discord server where there seems to be more players looking for games and even some tournaments going on.

And a map that is designed for 2-3 players might be best suited for those play counts, but will also be a wildly different ride at, say, five players. It plays out in Roman times on a lovely map of the Med (or just Italy on the flip-side if you’re playing with a lower player count) which is broken down into smaller zones. Guide one of these dynasties and send colonists to the remote realms of the Empire; develop your trade network; and appease the ancient gods for their favor — all to gain the chance to emerge victorious! Cards cannot be reclaimed (and played again), until the player uses a specific card to reclaim all of their cards. At its height, the Roman Empire extended from Britannia, to Egypt and Babylonia, and encompassed the Mediterranean Sea.

It never feels less than breezy, and is one of the few games in my collection that usually comes in under its estimated play time (which is no small feat, mind you).This variant is significantly clunkier, and it bloats both the play time and mechanical overhead without delivering a different experience. All players can place a house in the same city, but the cost increases with every house already there.
