The Color menu also has presets called Standard, Gaming, Night and HP Enhance+, which you can set to Low, Medium or High. Standard looks very similar to the Photography mode, targeting the P3 color space, as we’ll see in the following tests. HP Enhance+, meanwhile, is supposed to sharpen the display, but I felt it looked artificial and made some text look oddly uneven. There’s also an RGB Gain Adjust section in the Color Menu with sliders (up to 1,023) for red, green and blue.

As you can expect, a monitor with everything will inevitably cause the consumer to go bankrupt. As the years went by, the manufacturers had the wise decision to procure budget, professional monitors with a bunch of fair – sometimes subpar – features but with a higher balance towards professional-oriented ones such as color accuracy. Of course, the presence of this panel does not guarantee that the monitor will be color accurate to a professional standard. Based on an IPS panel, the HP U28 monitor delivers accurate, consistent and rich colors that won’t degrade at an angle thanks to the wide 178° viewing angles. Aside from that, this ratio appears to be a decent option for competitive gamers who want a larger advantage in FPS games during the specific situation when they’re in a very dark room, and they need to see their opponent better; so, increasing the brightness appears to be a good option.
The Standard mode’s P3 accuracy is particularly good news since you can squeeze a little extra contrast out of the U28 there. All things considered, this is a real deal; it gives you great resolution, some decent colors right out of the box, and doesn’t cost the earth.

So, while the HP X32 is more expensive than the norm and features a great panel combined with a high brightness ratio, its prices are still outside of the hybrid monitor’s price range, and as a result, we may expect a non-gamer-friendly refresh rate and response time. The HP boasts of the U28 being factor color-calibrated, allowing for hobbyists to enter pro-level territory when editing things like photos and videos. When measuring the P3 and Standard presets against the P3 triangle and sRGB against sRGB, errors were virtually impossible to see. The P3 mode shows a 3dE color error, and 3dE is the visible threshold. Its color chart shows slight oversaturation of red at the 20-80% saturation steps. Blue also has some oversaturation while just missing the outer blue point by a smidge. But these are very small errors that you’re unlikely to see this with the naked eye. This is pro-level accuracy across two different color spaces, showing stellar performance. In fact, it is a great question as to how they managed to keep this monitor with such low-grade weight, especially when we’re talking about a metal stand. This stand has a metallic gray finish and is quite heavy on itself, being unsurprisingly one of the main sources of the screen’s weight. Although the IPS panel of this monitor falls into the high-end category, we must admit that throughout the testing, the display showed slightly over-the-top glare levels compared to other displays in its price range.
If the motion blur bothers you, you may switch on the overdrive, but doing so will significantly reduce brightness and even color accuracy, and it can even not be worth it at all. While other factors like color gamut and coverage are important, the panel’s building quality – which directly affects pricing – has an even greater influence on the IPS’ quality differences. When someone brought up professional monitors a few years ago, we couldn’t help but fear the hurdle of the sky-high prices of such screens. Manufacturers at the time used to combine high responsiveness and professional capabilities for those monitors. To conclude, we can say that they plainly opted not to cater to gaming styles when designing the screen’s aesthetics. If you need anything more eye-catching, they already have it with the HP X27I.
