About this deal

Despite Gild’s closeness and the subtle dance of breath against her skin, there was an edge to his voice. An envy he had tried to keep from her since the king first announced their betrothal, but that became more apparent as the wedding approached.

Gild and Serilda's relationship was honestly so lovely, they are so much fun to see work together to both cause mischief and save their unborn child. They bring out the best in one another and seeing them struggle but then also bloom at the same time was really heartwarming. I wish there had been more time with their relationship that wasn't just in passing in some parts but it all worked out. Whilst the pacing issues that plagued the first book do continue, the lulls aren’t quite so noticeable this time around, and that’s because Meyer’s sequel feels more layered than the book that came before. Shifting the focus to the Erlking and the gods who separated him from his beloved Huntress adds another dimension to the tale. The stakes are higher than ever but Serilda is such a clever, resourceful and kind-hearted character – you can’t help but root for her. There aren’t as many scenes between her and Gild as you’d expect, given their romance is key to the story, but any moments alone that they share are always funny, sweet and tinged with the bittersweet knowledge that they both have so much to lose if the Erlking wins. While at a royal ball where the king is supposed to propose to her, Cath meets Jest—the strange yet attractive court joker. In this anthology, fifteen of the most gifted writers of young adult literature today take us on a exciting ride through history with American girls creating their own course. Likewise, Gild’s roguish charm and mischievousness was offset by several nuanced and emotional scenes surrounding the loss of his memories and an unexplainable sense of guilt, which I felt brought new dimension to his character. The chemistry between the pair was still fairly swoon-worthy but their dynamics were certainly angstier this time around.

Catherine may be among the most sought after girls in Wonderland, but her interests lie elsewhere. A darling of the unwed King of Hearts, the gifted baker hopes to open a pastry shop with her best friend; an ambition that her mother considers as an act of defiance given that she could potentially become the next Queen. Her smile fell fast. “Of course he has,” she said, her tone sour. “The children have just fallen asleep. Give me a moment.” She found, in trying to get to know the resident ghosts, that the closer someone had been to the royal family, the fewer memories they had of their lives before the massacre. A maid who scrubbed pots and pans in the scullery might remember her former life almost in its entirety, but someone who had regularly been in the presence of the king and queen, or prince and princess, would remember almost nothing. Serilda and Gild cannot break the curses that tether their spirits to Adalheid's haunted castle. There they remain trapped for eternity. On the night of the Endless Moon, the Erlking means to capture one of the seven gods and so be reunited with his lover, Perchta, who has been banished to the underworld.

The second 25% is torture, 1-star in every sense. It's a mud puddle to plough through at extra slow speed. Nothing happens there, Marissa Meyer overdoes the descriptiveness even more than usual, and the writing is horrendously basic; so basic many "paragraphs" are one word or three words, no exaggeration. It's so repetitive and soporific I lost 3 days trying to wade through it and losing the battle every time, I nearly abandoned the book in this stretch, and would have if, at approximately 42%, Meyer hadn't dropped a plot bomb, the first of several to come until the end, that enlivened the dull story and made it more interesting, turning the third 25% into another 4 star read.
