About this deal

Olive’s mother decides that the city is no longer safe for her children so Olive and her younger brother, Cliff, are evacuated to coastal Devon. The thing that touched me most within this wonderful novel was the opportunity to hear the stories behind all those effected by war along with the refugees and the impact they had on the locals. Olive is a brave heroine and there's a good twist towards the end that even the most wily readers won't see coming. Late night meetings behind closed doors, mysterious communications, maps, foreign words and furtive conversations.

We meet three siblings during an air raid in London and follow Olive and her brother Cliff on the hunt for the truth to their sister going missing. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! Olive also shows substantial resilience and determination throughout the book, making her a wonderful, relatable role model for children. Instead, Emma Carroll increases her use of descriptive language at key points, heightening the impact on the reader.I loved Emma Carroll’s ‘In Darkling Wood’ from 2016 Bookfest and this story may have even topped that. Set during WWII, we follow Olive and Cliff as they’re evacuated to the coast of Devon after months of heavy air raids across London. And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous.

When Olive is caught in an air raid, her mum decides that it is time her children were evacuated out of London and she is sent, with her brother, Cliff, to live in a small coastal village in Devon. I am sick and tired of the "mean girl becomes your bestie" trope that plagues contemporary kids' fiction. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous. Olive thinks that her mother and sister Sukie are both dead but soon she finds out the truth - her sister is in grave danger.
