About this deal

And yes it's a neat little bookshop they have there. Well worth the visit and to be fair I found a book (in the mens section The Snug) I had been seeking for some time there, after travelling from Kerikeri to Manapouri and visiting a number of bookshops. (Hawks. Another Kiwi author writing about deer hunting in NZ. Fiction but written around fact and a great read). I also found an old Rudyard Kipling book of children's stories which was too hard to resist. Ruth mentioned she had written this book but unfortunately didn't have any copies there or I would have bought it then. Having read it from the Library I may still go out and buy it as its a great book to have on the shelf to lend to other folk looking for a great NZ read. The menacing aura surrounding the group of strangers that have entered their property builds the suspense, as you wonder why they are there and what it all means. Through turbulent times, when she had no money to keep herself fed, through times of being scared and alone and at the mercy of the ocean or a dodgy man, Ruth's belief in herself, her ability to adapt and fit in has been the secret of her interesting and varied life. Going from crisis to crisis and with bunches of happy times in between. There are moments of enormous sadness in this story, but good humour and kindness shine through.

What she learnt about police corruption, and detectives like Roger Rogerson (later convicted of murder) led Shaw to flee Sydney, fearing for her life. Rated 9/10 This was almost a 10 for me. Why? Ruth is a NZ author who writes frankly about her life growing up in NZ, the struggles she faced, physically and mentally, interlaced with anecdotes relating to a few of the folk she meets at her Bookshop at the End of the World. A bittersweet tale and one can only wonder what she didn't write about in her life. She travelled (perhaps to escape), and met, worked and lived in an array of places with an array of folks both good and bad. But just months into their new life, Peter was killed in a car accident, while working as a journalist. The Tribulation will be a time of pain, terror, and wrath. Noteworthy to mention is that the Tribulation is God's work—not Satan's. The wrath being poured out on the world will be God’s wrath. The Tribulation is also known as “The Day of the Lord” ( Joel 1:15). i think the whole point of this book is to make the reader squirm. not with excess gore or violence or anything like that. but with anticipation. On the plus side, it was refreshing that the main family unit was made up of two dads and their adopted child, Wen. Maybe it's just the books I've been reading recently, but I don't often come across gay couples with children in my fiction and I really did appreciate that! Representation is important. It's just a shame I didn't give a flying toot about the actual characters... There was a huge scene that I know was meant to be really emotional and I didn't even bat an eyelid. And I'm a crier!! Oh, and some of the violence scenes were pretty brutal... which was good. But that's all I got! The truth was, the discussion that sparked those calls for Shaw to write her life story, had only revealed a small part of what Shaw had done and been through. Section Five - gotta skip Section Four as I don't have the energy to discuss the intended deep conversation we are all supposed to hold internally considering Armageddon, the book of Revelation, and nut-bags like David Koresh, Jim Jones, etc. That's sad because this could have been a great concept to examine - but the thing had drug on for so very long and its dialogue was so redundant that it could have indeed been the end of the world as we know it. And I'd feel fine.

As you read the novel, you will go on a gripping journey with the family that has been invaded and will be asking yourself many questions, who are these strangers? What do they want? Should you believe what they say?

She met her first husband, Peter, in Samoa, and they shifted to Brisbane, with Shaw pregnant and penniless.

Don't recommend the audiobook as some characters sounded quite robotic and it took me out of the story.

In June 2020, Ruth Shaw was wrapping up an interview with RNZ’s Kim Hill, about the bookshops Shaw had built in Manapōuri, on the fringe of Fiordland. Thank god i finished this after Christmas otherwise I would have been so stupidly annoyed my god. This book had such promise and a great build up going through but I just....can’t. Doomsday scares take two main forms. There are Christians who think in terms of the last judgement, the rapture and the return of Jesus; and there are secular end-timers who think the world could be hit by a stray meteor, invaded by aliens or zapped by freak radiation. There are fervent believers of both kinds who feel an urgent need to tell the world of their fears in the hope that the doubters will believe and be saved. The story was just sort of... bland. The characters weren’t very well developed at all. There were only a few of them, but I had a hard time picturing them in my mind. I’m not really sure what they looked like. The dialogue was also really weak and robotic. I had the same issue with the last book, but most of the dialogue read like a very rough draft of a screenplay.
