A very underwhelming addition to a first book that I wholeheartedly loved. Ah, well. I guess this just wasn't for me. I'm still considering whether to continue with this series. There just wasn't the depth, the complexity, the darkness, or the action that I loved so much in the first book. I really miss the character dynamics that felt so fresh but now feel shoved out of the main focus of the plot. Still, Six and Five's friendship has my heart. Fireborn swept me away to a rich, vibrant world filled with bold characters and enthralling monsters. A fantastic debut.” —Joseph Elliott, author of The Good Hawk This is again a series where I'm on the fence as to whether I want it adapted into a film or TV series. I think it would work well, with the fantasy lands and animals, and this underdog hero you root for. But on the flip side, I think most of the genius comes from Aisling's creation and what she's managed to bring out of your imagination, and I'm not convinced anyone could capture that as well as it needs to be.

Even though the main protagonists are children, like the first book, they're written so well, and are so well rounded and developed that an adult can identify with them. Their likes and dislikes, their loves and their fears are so recognisable and human. I absolutely loved FIREBORN. Such a cinematic journey in both the literal and emotional sense! Alles is weer van de hand van Sophie Medvedeva en wat vooral opvalt is de tegenstelling met Boek 1. Daar waren alle tekeningen erg donker door het bos, hier is juist alles erg licht door het ijs. Bij de cover is het alleen jammer dat de naam ' Aisling Fowler' juist recht over die golf van het paleis staat, waardoor ze niet goed zichtbaar is. Maar goed. Details.

Feniks maakt in Feniks en het ijspaleis een flinke evolutie door. Vijf, één van de andere personages, maakt ook een sterke karakterontwikkeling door. Hij kiest aan het einde zelfs zijn jagersnaam. Joekelhond, die we in deel één hebben leren kennen, wordt steeds menselijker, wat hem aandoenlijk maakt en ook een sterkere positie in het verhaal geeft. De andere personages blijven echter vrij vlak, waardoor het ingewikkeld kan zijn om te onthouden wie welk personage ook alweer precies is. Brilliant, epic, exhilarating! Over de heksen zelf, als personages, ben ik ook heel enthousiast - en dan vooral over Zenith, die ik verreweg het beste personage uit de hele reeks vind. Ze is zo enthousiast en leergierig over alles dat ze maar hoort, ze bracht constant een glimlach op mijn gezicht. Ik vond het dan ook heel jammer dat het een hele tijd duurt voor Vijf haar wat beschaafder gaat behandelen. Het is gelukkig al duidelijk dat Zenith ook in Boek 3 aanwezig zal zijn - hopelijk is haar rol daar even groot. De andere heksen leren we wat minder goed kennen (wat weten we nu bijvoorbeeld van Libbet en Thea?), met uitzondering van Nara. Ik ben ook wel benieuwd hoe het nu verder moet, want als ik het goed heb... zijn er op het einde van Boek 2 niet veel heksen meer over...This sequel blazes even brighter than Fowler’s debut. De snelheid van het verhaal en de opbouw van de wereld vragen wel wat meer leeservaring. Hoewel het zeker geen slecht verhaal is en wel degelijk vermakelijk, is dit fantasy verhaal niet uniek ten opzichte van andere jeugd fantasyboeken. Schon von Beginn an spürte ich den Sog, der mich noch tiefer in die Welt brachte und ich lernte neue Kreaturen kennen, aber auch neue Elemente der Magie. Es war wieder unglaublich rasant, spannend und fesselnd. Gerade das Ende hielt zahlreiche Plottwists bereit, die absolut unmöglich vorherzusehen waren. Anekdote an mich selbst; wenn du am Ende des Buchs bemerkst das es anscheinend eine Trilogie ist statt einer Dilogie 😳, dann habe ich Pech gehabt!

Zuerst ist mir die hilfreiche Karte positiv aufgefallen. Diese habe ich während des Lesens zur besseren Orientierung zu Rate gezogen.
