About this deal

First up is the start of the latest narrative ark… we mean arc… that will shape the future of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Arks of Omen is here, in the form of book one in the series: Abaddon . Bad news for Terra and the slowly awakening Emperor of Mankind; bad news for the newly returned Lion El’ Jonson, and bad news for the Imperial Regent Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines.

Every faction gets their own secondary objectives in the book – including newer armies like Leagues of Votann and World Eaters – and existing secondary objectives have been refined or replaced across the board. A bunch of universal objectives now offer bonus CP if you make good use of Troops – these trusty soldiers are valued for a reason! Step 10 (Reserves and Transports) sees a pretty big change! Transports MUST have at least one model inside them. If they do not, the model is treated as destroyed after deployment. This is mostly targeted at Wave Serpents and Raiders perhaps, but shouldn’t be too much of a hurdle. Each time a unit from your army completes this action, if the objective marker that was raided as a result was wholly within your deployment zone, score 1 VP; if that objective marker was wholly within your opponent’s deployment zone, score 3VP; otherwise, score 2VP.

Players cannot include any other detachments in their army – their army will therefore consist of one compulsory Arks of Omen Detachment, and possibly one optional Allied Detachment. Perhaps the biggest shift comes with Command points. Players now start each battle with half as many as before – three for Incursions and six for Strike Force battles. What’s more, there are no freebies in Nephilim – players must now also pay a Command point for their first Warlord Trait and Relic, using two new Core Requisition Stratagems. Restrictions: All units must be from the same Faction (and that Faction cannot be IMPERIUM, CHAOS, AELDARI, or TYRANIDS). This detachment cannot include any understrength units. Specialist Ladz includes Ghazghkull, Kaptin Badrukk, Makari, Mad Dok Grotsnik, Zodgrod Wortsnagga, and Specialist Mobs.

The imperial guard got a suite of new options, all of which seem a little bit interesting to test out. Now, this is a giant change! Instead of doing all the other stuff, you just take basically whatever you want as long as you have an HQ and three of anything else (other than flyers). This is really interesting, and we’ll have to see how it changes games.White Scars got one option, but it is insanely strong. There’s a mix of VPs for killing on the charge, killing after advancing with shots, and killing a character or monster after charging. As the mainline narrative expansion, we’ve been hearing about this new series for a while, so its exciting to finally know the first book is coming! Boarding Actions Terrain Set If your Arks of Omen Detachment is either an ASURYANI or DRUKHARI Detachment, you can include one HARLEQUINS Patrol Detachment as an Allied Detachment. ADEPTUS ASTARTES armies can now choose whether to change their Combat Doctrines to the next step, rather than having to follow the instructions set out in Codex: Space Marines – a fair reflection of their tactical flexibility!
