About this deal

Well there are certainly a group of hardcore fans all around the world that are aware of and appreciate ALL of his work! Akira was written in the ’80s, but the story is set in the year 2019. If you have yet to read Akira, it’s interesting to read something that is based on the time period in which we are currently living. To see how someone envisioned the future, which was not too long ago our present, and how it compares to the current state of the world, makes it only that much more enjoyable than it already is to explore. It ranks among my top futuristic manga and stands as one of the most influential series ever published.

Some pictures from the Akira 35th Anniversary box set, Otomo Katsuhiro’s groundbreaking manga. Two notable highlights from this new set includes the the original Japanese right to left reading format, as well as the original Japanese hand drawn sound effects. He’s done so many illustrations and projects over the years, but he really hasn’t done THAT much manga. I really wish Kodansha or someone else would just translate and publish ALL of it. The inclusion of the excellent Akira Club art book ( in hard cover too ! ) is a welcome addition, although I already have at least 2 soft cover copies of the book lying around somewhere… Given that this boxset was released only by Kodansha USA ( Kodansha Japan didn’t release a Japanese language edition ), it’s likely that Otomo himself wasn’t personally involved, or Kodansha USA would probably have used that as an extra selling point. Otomo is likely taking it easy these days, working only on projects he’s very interested in. I would definitely love to see him take on a new manga, even if it’s only a small project. Otomo began his career as a manga creator on such works as Domu, Kibun wa mō Sensō, and his most famous title internationally, Akira. He then branched into animation by directing part of the Robot Carnival omnibus and a feature film adaptation of his own Akira story. He directed other anime projects such as the Memories omnibus, the Gundam: Mission to the Rise event short, and the Steamboy feature. He also collaborated on Harmagedon, Roujin Z, Spriggan, Metropolis, Freedom Project and Hipira: The Little Vampire. Otomo had revealed in 2012 that he was preparing his first long series since Akira. He said the same year that the manga would take place in the Meiji Era and that he would work on the manga himself without assistants. The manga was supposed to debut that fall in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, but it was delayed, and Otomo said that the target audience may be older than Weekly Shonen Sunday's. In summary, this is a worthy box set to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the manga, and a fantastic upgrade for Otomo Katsuhiro’s magnum opus, and I would highly recommend it to any fan of the manga or anime. I only wish Kodansha Japan had released a Japanese edition of this, because I still prefer to read the comic in its original language. This art book shows how Akira influenced designs in everything from advertising to streetwear, while also giving you a behind-the-scenes look into how the series was conceived and created. It’s a fantastic companion book and a wonderful collective piece as well.
