About this deal

Maureen explains that while she was living and working in England as a cleaner, her coworkers used to tease her resulting in a nervous breakdown. Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, and Mag, her manipulative ageing mother, whose interference in Maureen's first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship sets in motion a train of events that leads inexorably toward the play's terrifying denouement.

When Mag interferes once too often Maureen decides the time has come to break free — in a very violent way. It was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award as Best Play for the London production, and the 1998 Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning four, for Best Leading Actress in a Play, Best Featured Actor in a Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play ( Anna Manahan), and Best Direction of a Play ( Garry Hynes). Directed by Garry Hynes, the cast stars Marie Mullen as Mag, Aisling O'Sullivan as Maureen, Aaron Monaghan as Ray and Marty Rea as Pato. Maureen has given him instructions to make himself known, and she, too, comes out in only her underwear. We feared the poker, so wanted by young Ray to despatch the coppers "so you see the blood pour from them", might be deployed. Perched on the edge of her rocking chair, Susan Twist is compellingly awful as Mag, the controlling old mother whose sweet smile belies a vicious temperament. A Tony Award-winning dark comedy thriller, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, “crackles with emotional fire and the blackest of comedy that is both hilarious and horrific” ( The Guardian). With Cameron Tharma completing the quartet as Pato’s kid brother Ray, it makes for an evening as familiar as it is unsettling. However, Mag has other ideas, and the two women are plunged into a desperate conflict which leads to a shocking conclusion.

Maureen, knowing Mag should not have that information, tortures Mag with hot oil until she confesses the contents of the letter. The production started in Ireland in Galway at the Town Hall Theatre in September 2016, and then toured to The Everyman, Cork; the Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick; and the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. Ray already resents Maureen, because she once confiscated the ball from his swingball set when he was a child and refused to give it back to him. A 2001 adaptation was undertaken by The Tron Theatre in Glasgow, starring Anne Marie Timoney as Maureen and directed by Iain Heggie. Yet their relationship, however awful it is (and over arguments about Complan lumps, the smell after the mammy empties her po into the sink each morning, it really is) is grim and familiar, almost a grotesque marriage. With the arrival of an unexpected admirer, Maureen finally sees the possibility of escaping her dismal life.

Left alone in the house, Maureen puts on Mag's sweater, sits in her rocking chair, and adopts her mannerisms. Mag has a bad back and a badly burned hand, but Maureen suspects that she can do more than she lets on. Winner of four Tony Awards on Broadway and nominated for an Olivier Award, the play conjures up the unbearable tension and loneliness of an isolated existence that surely speaks to all of us today. The play combines thrilling elements of farce and melodrama with a searing critique on the Irish belief in the sanctity of the family. He comes up with her eponymous title and their love scene, after a send-off of some Americans, was both touching and funny.Photograph: Helen Maybanks View image in fullscreen Claustrophobic isolation … Orla Fitzgerald as Maureen in The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Rachel O’Riordan directs a major revival of this darkly comic, award-winning play by Martin McDonagh ( Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; The Lieutenant of Inishmore), starring Adam Best ( Giri/Haji), Ingrid Craigie ( Roadkill; The Cripple of Inishmaan), Orla Fitzgerald ( The Young Offenders) and Kwaku Fortune ( Line of Duty; Normal People). Despite the grubbiness of the cottage’s interior, Good Teeth Theatre’s stage design contains poetry with its back-screen of images – the leaves, trees and sky – and the crisp, hurly burly of weather in Anna Clock’s sound design bring atmosphere. Our playgroup managed to lock into the accents marvellously because the writing has an accurate ear.

Seizing on it, Maureen tortures Mag with hot oil until she confesses the letter's existence and contents.

He reveals that, although he has barely spoken to Maureen in 20 years of acquaintance, he has secretly thought of her as "the beauty queen of Leenane" for a long time. It transferred to London's West End, where it opened at the Royal Court Theatre on 29 February 1996.
