Using Automap, Launchpad can function as a standard MIDI controller, letting you create custom MIDI maps with 72 buttons transmitting CC or MIDI note data.

As well as using your pads to jam in session view or create entire songs, you can also control your mixer: start and stop loops, arm tracks, and control volumes, pans and sends. The Launchpad S will not work with an iPad if it is in full-power mode unless a separate powered USB hub is used. As well as 'Ableton Live Launchpad Edition', Launchpad S comes with a software version of Novation's classic analogue mono-synth - the Bass Station. Software is also a bit complicated to learn and you have to figure it out yourself or watch videos on YouTube. The hardware is made for Ableton Live and compatible with FL Studio and other major music software on Mac and PC.Some of the less obvious but equally important changes to the Launchpad S occur on the software side of things. You can control many Live Loops functions and mixing parameters in Logic Pro with a Novation Launchpad. It has much brighter LEDs, a significantly faster refresh rate, is now plug and play with other software such as FL Studio and even works with iPad.

There's a lot to be said for conservative enhancement, and I think this particular controller sequel deserves to do rather well. It is especially designed for launching loops/clips and triggering effects as well as getting full mixer control including volume, effects sends, pan, mute, solo and track arm. This mode is recommended if the Launchpad S is being used with a standard desktop/laptop computer, and particularly in daylight.
