One cable is not necessarily better than the other across the board, but each does have its place. If you have the choice between DisplayPort 1.4 (or 1.4a) and HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort would be the better option. In other cases, if a monitor only gives you the choice between, say, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI could be the way to go for the HDR support, as long as all your devices support the HDMI version in question. HDMI stands forHigh DefinitionMultimedia Interface, and this cable has been in the industry standard for many years now. Developed in 2002 by big names like Hitachi, Sony, and Phillips, HDMI has been mass adopted across modern technology – including GPUs and gaming monitors. As a result, HDMI cables come in a variety of sizes and lengths, with support for resolutions up to 7680 x 4320. This isn’t just much more than DisplayPort 1.4, it’s a huge leap over the current favorite high-end audio/video transmission protocol, HDMI 2.1. That can manage a mere 48 Gbps, with a maximum data rate of 42.6 Gbps. VESA released the DisplayPort 2.1 specification today. Typically when an industry group announces a new standard, it takes months or even years for products supporting the spec to be available to consumers. But DisplayPort 2.1 products are already available; in fact, you may already own some. VESA also declared today that any product that was already DisplayPort 2.0-certified before today's announcement is now DisplayPort 2.1-certified, too. What is DisplayPort 2.0? It's the next generation of cable for 8K resolution movies and games. What is DisplayPort 2.0 AMD recently announced that its upcoming generation of Ryzen 7000 processors and their compatible 600-series motherboards will all support a combination of four HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0 ports. Those processors and motherboards are set to launch sometime in Q3 2022, so we’re mere months away from a range of compatible DIY home-built components and pre-built PCs hitting store shelves. DisplayPort 2.0 monitors were expected to become widely available in the latter months of 2020, but after a delay announced by VESA, they are now slated to arrive in the second half of 2021. Are There Any DisplayPort 2.0 Graphics Cards?However, can you get a DisplayPort cable that is too long? Actually, yes. Beyond becoming a tripping hazard, the quality of a DisplayPort cable will go down the longer it is. Fortunately, this isn’t really a problem for customers because DisplayPort cable manufacturers will give you the resolution capacity (see below) of the cables they sell for the size they are sold in. If you buy a wire that fits your resolution needs and length needs, you’re good to go!

This is the standard color depth used on most computer displays. Note that some operating systems refer to this as "32-bit" color depth—this is the same as 24-bit color depth. The 8 extra bits are for alpha channel information, which is only present in software. At the transmission stage, this information has already been incorporated into the primary color channels, so the actual video data transmitted across the cable only contains 24 bits per pixel.
