About this deal

Sophie: The imaginative, creative, nearsighted and kind-hearted protagonist of the story who becomes a brave international heroine. Voiced by Michael Knowles and Ballard Berkeley in the 1989 film and portrayed by Chris Shields and Matt Frewer in the 2016 film.

The BFG explains to Sophie that giants are afraid of only one person - Jack from the fairy tale ''Jack and the Beanstalk,'' where a giant is killed. Tourists come in huge numbers to watch the giants in the pit, who are only fed snozzcumbers; they receive an unexpected welcome snack when three drunks manage to climb the safety fence one night and fall in. The books illustrations leave little to describe the individual giants, however the animated film gives them unique designs. When the Queen's brave soldiers are dropped down to tie up the giant's wrists and ankles, Fleshlumpeater was lying on his right arm and they could not tie the arms together. When he receives the nightmare, Fleshlumpeater immediately starts "thrashing about madly" and screams about Jack chasing him.Roald Dahl had a long partnership with artist Quentin Blake who illustrated almost all of his children’s books. The name suggests he likes to smash maidens, but it is never confirmed it could mean he smashes them with his teeth. Fleshlumpeater is a leader in the group of giants and confronts the BFG about leaving during the daytime. They vary their choice of destination both to avoid detection and because the humans' origins affect their taste.

A 6ft/200lb man has a basal metabolic rate of 2226, and eats 2,671 calories a day (if you’re curious, the 20% difference is caused by thermal inefficiency – your stomach doesn’t perfectly convert food into energy, which would break the second law of thermodynamics. He becomes friends with a girl named Sophie, and together they make sure the giants can't eat anyone else. Every country that the giants had visited in the past sends thanks and gifts to the BFG and Sophie, for whom residences are built in Windsor Great Park.

Japanese beans is very small, so a giant will need to gobble up about six Japanese before he is feeling full up. The BFG takes Sophie to Dream Country but is bullied along the way by his neighbors, led by Fleshlumpeater, the largest and strongest.

The BFG takes her to Giant Country, where they eat snozzcumbers, go dream-catching, and stop the other giants from eating human beans. While Fleshlumpeater's size and nasty behavior seem impossible to overcome, his cowardice cripples his ability to escape Sophie and the BFG's wit and bravery. While having the nightmare, he is yelling about the "spikesticking beanstalk" that Jack is using and Fleshlumpeater is squirming all over the ground like a "colossal tortured snake. They reverberated around the walls of the cave like thunder and the glass jars rattled on their shelves. The BFG explains, in a unique and messy speech, that his nine neighbours are much bigger and stronger giants, who all happily eat humans every night. The Fleshlumpeater, appearing to be the leader of the giants is the most terrifying having tribal tattoos and markings, ear rings and battle scars, gold wrist cuffs, razor sharp, talon-like fingernails, one red eye and one blinded eye with a scar. But most astonishing of all, the force of the explosions actually lifted the enormous giant clear off his feet, like a rocket. Inside the jar, just below the edge of the label, Sophie could see the putting-to-sleep dream lying peacefully on the bottom, pulsing gently, sea-green like the other one, but perhaps a trifle larger. So Roald Dahl sent him one of his own sandals in the post, and that was what Quentin Blake ended up drawing.

Even after being very cautious, Fleshlumpeater woke up and grabbed a soldier, laughing as he is preparing to eat him.The book is dedicated to Dahl's late daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis at the age of seven in 1962. The BFG has won numerous awards including the 1985 Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis as the year's best children's book, in its German translation Sophiechen und der Riese [16] and the 1991 Read Alone and Read Aloud BILBY Awards from the Children's Book Council of Australia.
