About this deal

By the end, I came to the conclusion that this book felt like one big filler but I adored every single second of it and the emotional damage it caused. Though one amazing thing came out of all this by the end: Lord Byron (I listened to the audiobook I have no idea how to spell anyone's name) is NO MORE. The cliffhanger for this one is rivaling the cliffhangers from the Blood And Ash series! Something I thought I would never say 😭 This is a two POV book told from the POV´s of Caldris and Estrella, out of which Estrella´s POV is the majority of the book.

Then we have Caelum, who’s type I am usually down bad for, but something about him did not sit right with me. Like Estrella his character was very inconsistent, just not to the same extreme. For example - he would stress how Estrella always had a choice with him (how very Rhys), but in the same breath tell her what to do. The line between protective and misogynistic was a little too thin, and by the end, had me hoping a new love interest would be introduced. I read a good amount of dark romance.. so it really wasn’t the content that bothered me, but the way it was delivered. That being said, I think there is potential for him to be redeemed in the next book if done right. There are a lot of things we are left unsure about, leaving room for both characters to develop and grow as the story continues. Also, everyone and their grandmother could see that twist at the end coming from a mile away because we've read it before and the world building was so underwhelming. What the hell was the purpose of those lists at the beginning when they served no purpose at all? Huh??? What??? If you've read From Blood and Ash you'll definitely notice many similarities, and if you loved FBAA I think you'll love this one too.

Even when she hated him he still roped her into sex cause she just couldn’t deny the attraction. The mating bond was a crutch in this book. It was toxic. And I absolutely love fated mates. It has NEVER made me this uncomfortable. It felt like a way to make Estrella do things she didn’t want to because of the bond. And on a last note, there were like no side characters. There were, but none that were close to the main leads as their friends of something and that bored me, because the story progressed at such a slow pace, Estrella and Caelum met at around 30% and then they just travelled until the 70% mark, and it was just so boring with just the two of them, because they didn't do or talk about anything of substance. Yeah, Cealum told her a couple stories and one was relevant at the end, but that's it. And even that was predictable as all hell. Also, the romance progressed at a weird pace. They said I love you way too fast even for a book about fated mates.

The side characters in this added so much to the story. Holt, the wolves, and surprise faces that I won’t mention because spoilers. The secondary characters also got exponentially more interesting and solid in the second half of the book. Imelda and Holt 😏 Fallon and Estrella’s friendship 🥹 The wolves are incredible. THE CLIFFHANGER WAS BANGIN. Things I thought I knew… I most certainly did not 🤯👀 If only we had the next book to read 🥲🥲🥲 I mean those are all really great plot points!! But we never get anywhere with them in this first book :(

unfortunately for me, i found this one both too long and too fast-paced in term of what happened to the characters' feelings and development. on the one hand, this book is literally just the journey to the fae realm which was incredibly boring. on the other hand, in terms of actual days it's too little for what actually happens with feelings and how the fmc feels about the mmc, for how the feelings progress and where we end up. but most of all, it was just really boring and it felt stretched out. i can't help but think the pacing for the story overall would have been so much better had this book been half or a third in size and the feelings development had happen through-out more time. My fate is bonded to two princes– one born of blood, the other of power— but my trust lies in neither. DNF at 56%…life’s too short to read books that I can already guess the ending of (and it’s annoying). Isolde de Lara considers her wedding day her death day. To end a years-long war, she is to marry vampire king, Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev, and kill him.Because life isn’t always tidy. We don’t always have the answers we want, and love isn’t always pretty,” Re-read #1: URGH, I still love this so much! I re-read it to get ready to get into the next book and I adored every moment. The suspense, the intrigue, oh my! I loved how the heroine rationalized away all the "coincidences" about the hero and any indication of something being slightly off about him. Like you go girl! The hero's sexual innuendos are gold and I love that even through it all he's SO emotionally available that it's disarming. Though on my second read though I did come across someone saying that another person had "eerie mismatched eyes" as a negative trait. In this house, we don't shame people for things they can't help. Heterochromia is a genetic mutation and it's not indicative of someone being good or bad. It just is. It's pretty cool if you ask me *shrugs* Overall, I was intrigued by the storyline and worldbuilding, however, the characters and romance fell short for me. Regardless, I am curious as to what happens next, so I may read the next book. We have the fated mates trope, which is a common concept we encounter in fae books and I've grown to expect it in these books, and here the mates are marked. I had such high hopes. This was an absolute disappointment. It stripped all the good parts of from blood and ash, an ember in the shadow, A court of thrones and roses and made just an absolute mess of a book.

What Lies Beyond The Veil - Abstract Books REVIEW - What Lies Beyond The Veil - Abstract Books

If you're a fan of JLA's From Blood and Ash and enjoy dagger to the throat meetings, fated mates, forced proximity, 'touch her and die', 'who hurt you', possessive alphaholes, exhibitionism, praise k!nks, and breeding k!nk, you may like this. I read my ARC while I was on vacation, and I gotta tell you, the amount of times I wanted to throw my kindle in the sea… 😅 I’m truly unsure how to rate this book. I decided to DNF at first halfway through. Couldn’t let it go so I decided to finish it so I could form my opinion and thoughts in a less emotional state and with the whole narrative. So strap in this is gonna be a long one. I have so many thoughts so bare with me as I attempt to rope then together. I thought I’d do a reread just before book 2 comes out next week! I forgot how much I loved the world building in this book. Estrella is from ultra religious, misogynistic society steeped in poverty that completes yearly human sacrifices. On the day she is supposed to die, the misty veil separating the fae and human realms falls and all hell breaks lose. On her journey to escape, she meets the handsome and dangerous stranger, Caelum, who, like Estrella, is fae marked and destined to a mate with a fae.

Living in a world where women are only meant to marry and bear children, she's had a lot to deal with in her life. She's trying to protect her family, seemingly naïve and fearful, she turns out to be a great character — brave, kind and sassy (just how I like them, heh) Feeling your heart flutter for men who would never have been able to give you what your soul craved in the end, and knowing that, I was trapped on the other side of the Veil waiting for you. Just waiting for centuries to be able to hold you."
