About this deal

Limited Durability: Fire stopping materials should be able to withstand the rigors of time and maintain their integrity over the long term. Pink foam, however, may degrade or deteriorate over time, compromising its ability to effectively stop the spread of fire.

Here at Fastbuild, we sell a range of building supplies in the UK, including expanding foam. Here, we look at its many potential uses to help you on your next job. What is Expanding Foam?Far better to insist that installation complies with the certificate’s installation instructions unless the installer can prove that their proposed method is better than that certified by the door manufacturer. Claims made in leaflets given out with boxes of expanding foam do not cut it. In this Bitesize CPD we will be looking at expanding fire foam used for filling gaps between frame and substrate. Windows and doors are often the primary culprits for heat loss. Expanding foam can be used to fill the gaps around window and door installations, helping to reduce heat loss in these areas and improve overall insulation. Pipe Stabilising Expanding foam is not a miracle cure. While it is hugely useful, it should not be used to solve all problems. Expanding Foams are not an intumescent, it cannot close or crush a plastic pipe and should never be installed as such.

If we had to stand up in a court and state why we had made a decision that allowed the fire doors to be fitted contrary to manufacturers testing and certification, what would we say? It was easier for the installer? Intumescent sealant, on the other hand, does not expand when applied, and only swells up when a fire has broken out and it reaches a certain temperature. In this circumstance, the sealant will then expand and seal a hole to reinstate a wall or door’s fire containment properties. A common mistake is for fire rated foam to be used in situations where intumescent sealant is better suited. I am sure that we have all seen this before: Expanding pink foam squirted into oversized gaps around fire doorsWhen choosing an expanding foam, ensure you have the right product for your job. Expanding Foam Tape PU foams are combustible and generally will only offer fire-stopping properties when used in narrow voids or gaps Use (of mastic or expanding foam) is conditional on the mastic or expanded foam having test evidence for the structure that is being used (e.g. timber to concrete, concrete to concrete, flexible partition to timber, flexible partition to concrete). Restrictions apply unless appropriate test evidence is available.* Fire foams are usually tinted pink to distinguish them from other non-fire rated foams, but they’re all different and have varying functions and properties - make sure you’re using the right one.

Insufficient Smoke Barrier: Fire stopping materials should not only prevent the spread of flames but also act as a barrier against smoke. Pink foam may not possess the necessary properties to effectively contain smoke, which can be equally hazardous during a fire incident.

Some fire-resistant foams are specifically designed and tested to fill larger gaps. Closely follow the conditions of use stated in the certification if installing a fire-rated foam product
