In 2015, Sophie McKay Knight’s portrait of Sara garnered media and critical attention at the National Gallery of Scotland. This is where we meet her – and where Griffiths (known for her Dr Ruth Galloway series) has a lot of fun setting up the scares that follow. And of course, I’m always interested in the women, so I was interested in looking at the way women interacted with the Garden as an institution, which was at the time part of the University of Edinburgh’s medical school. Following a mystery bequest, Mirabelle sets out on the trail of an RAF pilot who went missing during World War II.Elizabeth is a newly widowed woman, desperate for a new and happier life, she arrives at the home of her late husband’s aunt, Clementina. Can you imagine a different Scotland, a Scotland where women are commemorated in statues and streets and buildings – even in the hills and valleys? However, there is so much more to the story, and the monarch's visit feels almost like a minor plot point in comparison.

Review | The Fair Botanists - SecretWorldOfaBook

Most of them have common interests but are all incredibly unique in their own ways with wonderful personalities which enable connections to be made – some more intimate than others! Even beyond the style struggles, the prose problems, and the tense troubles, the story itself is utterly, entirely unforgettable, with as much hold on the reader as a gentle breeze. Sara Sheridan has created a captivating, utterly convincing world and a wonderfully heartwarming story. There are power-plays and hints of blackmail, ruthless dealings on all sides, and a strong vein of feminist thinking about the right of women, including Belle and Elizabeth, to choose their own way of life.

Inserting over a thousand women’s stories into our real life environment (both rural and urban) was an absolute honour – even if the monuments were mostly imaginary. There's no enlightenment without enlightening women, and Sara Sheridan gives us two great ones to reckon with in Belle and Elizabeth.

It was also lovely to explore the connections in my home town – so much of the built environment in Edinburgh is still there, though the city boundary used to be at the Water of Leith. A page turning read with the pace of a thriller, The Fair Botanists is a fascinating glimpse into a turbulent age and some truly intriguing characters.

As a historical narrative, The Fair Botanists is interesting in that half of the characters are taken directly from history, and half are fictional. There is some really interesting biology throughout the story, both in terms of the plants depicted, and their properties. What is less great, though, is when certain things are written in present tense that should really, really be written in past tense.

In 2015 Sara was named one of the Saltire Society’s 365 most influential Scottish women, past and present.
