Rap and Inos were comfortable, secure, and truly happy, raising their family in the little backwater kingdom of Krasnegar, well removed from the hurly-burly of great affairs. I purchased Sinai Tapestry and Jerusalem Poker in the news stand of the St George Hotel subway stop in Brooklyn Heights New York over two decades ago. If you’ve already done that, your item hasn’t arrived, or it’s not as described, you can report that to Etsy by opening a case. Jerusalem Poker and Sinai Tapestry are the two best books of the four books which make up the fantastic Jerusalem Quartet. Jerusalem Poker is the second volume of the Jerusalem Quartet, which begins with Sinai Tapestry and concludes with Nile Shadows and Jericho Mosaic.

Some days time goes too fast and some days it stands still and in the moments of joy time doesn’t exist. Whittemore in 5 interconnected novels, three of which I have read (only Sinai tapestry reads poorly as a stand alone) presents his gonzo secret history of the 20th century. The premise of this book is excellent; a Christian, Jew and Muslim play poker for twelve years to determine who gains control over Jerusalem.

It seems to be under a continual siege of unknown nature, by unknown forces, and it just goes right on whistling and shouting and howling and doing all kinds of things I have no control over.

The author presents long digressions into the mundane minutia regarding the lives of minor characters only to tell us (after 30 minutes) that some tangential relation to the minor character is, in fact, a major player in the plot. Just in case we forgot the first part, Whittemore keeps re-introducing chunks from it, which may be fine if you read the first one five years previously but not if you read it a week previously. These books combine magic realism, war stories, gothic horror, tall tales, romantic adventure, allegory, and spy thriller (Whittermore can be placed on that short list of authors who was also a spy or intelligence agent hanging out with Graham Greene, James Tiptree jr. On the last day of December 1921, three enigmatic men -- Cairo Martyr, a blue-eyed African who controls the Middle East's supply of aphrodisiac mummy dust; O'Sullivan Beare, a former Irish patriot and. D. James' electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.
