About this deal

This tradition of memorizing and reciting has allowed us as parents additional glimpses into the hearts of our children. As they choose their own passages, we often discover what challenges or joys they are experiencing. We also learn of their wisdom and sometimes of their sense of humor. I remember on John’s 40th birthday when our then 15-year-old daughter presented a poem by Lewis Carroll: BYU should inspire students to keep alive their curiosity and prepare them to continue learning throughout their lives. . . . A BYU degree should educate students in how to learn, teach them that there is much still to learn, and implant in them a love of learning “by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118). [In The Mission of Brigham Young University and The Aims of a BYU Education (Provo: BYU, 1996), 12] TV actors, particularly in soaps, tend to have excellent short term memories – they remember the lines they need for the scenes they’re shooting that day, but the day after, the lines have gone. Learning By Heart is an important series of stories that could and should spark many discussions. Highly recommended – and hard to put down.”— Ulrik Juul Christensen, MD, Executive Chairman of Area9 Group

[Todd A. Britsch, “Memorization: ‘Regurgitation’ or ‘Learning by Heart’?” Focus on Faculty 5, no. 3 (summer 1997): 2] Ultimately, the power is in your hands. The full poem first appeared in Carroll’s 1871 novel Through the Looking-Glass, his superb follow-up book to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and as well as giving us several new words now in common use (see the link above to discover more, and to read the full poem), it is also a glorious short narrative poem about a hero slaying a monster. What’s not to like? You can test this for yourself by thinking about some of the nursery rhymes, songs and poems you learned when young, and the way these keep you company still. Like Housman, then, Frost favoured traditional verse forms but also a plain-spoken yet lyrical style. And although many people know the words in the final stanza of this poem, a good many people misinterpret them – and how well does anyone know the rest of ‘The Road Not Taken’? Why not commit this classic poem about opting for the road ‘less travelled’ to memory… O remember, remember,” Alma said to each of his sons (Helaman 5:9). Let us “treasure up wisdom” in our hearts (D&C 38:30) by dwelling in our hearts on blessings of protection, comfort, and peace; by pondering in our hearts moments of inspiration and revelation; and, above all, by remembering that we are covenant children of Heavenly Father. We must engrave our covenants in the fleshy tables of our hearts.

Learning by rote is about the technique or practice of memorizing. Learning by heart on the other hand, is the nature or quality of what has been learned.Hill, J.; Dierker, D.; Neil, J.; Inder, T.; Knutsen, A.; Harwell, J.; Coalson, T.; Van Essen, D. After their first year, she described the impact on literacy: “Introducing more poetry into our school day has, without a doubt, helped to develop early literacy skills. I think on some mystical level that Jan Stewart and Corita Kent were joined at the tip in the creation of Learning by Heart. The mystery of life is apparent in the creative expression of their work together”—Bob Bates, Co-founder, Inner-City Arts Bohbot, V.D.; Allen, J.J.; Dagher, A.; Dumoulin, S.O.; Evans, A.C.; Petrides, M.; Kalina, M.; Stepankova, K.; Nadel, L.
