Even the love of his life, Kittredge, is CIA, and much of the story is told in letters between the two. He won a second Pulitzer for The Executioner's Song and is the only person to have won Pulitzers in both fiction and nonfiction.

The personalities were the most prominent from every conceivable field including music (Sinatra), media (Monroe) and corporate (Hughes) apart from the worlds of criminals, sleuths, politicians, and the police. Featuring a tapestry of unforgettable characters both real and imagined, Harlot's Ghost is a panoramic achievement in the tradition of Tolstoy, Melville, and Balzac, a triumph of Mailer's literary prowess. as a homosexual and as a Jew, is nevertheless one of its shrewdest operatives, as well as one of Mailer's most winning creations. Much of the novel is epistolary exchanges between Harry and Kittredge (who also works for the CIA as some type of behavioral analyst); through their letters much Cold War history and covert minutiae are revealed. This is true neither to tenors nor to the tone of Allen Dulles -- nor, I should think, to the tenor of C.I am Mailer fan anyway and this is definitely a Mailer book, so if you like his writing, you will love this. Once, when I was a boy (for I studied the names of wildflowers then) I found the white-vein orchid in some swampy woods; it was greenish-white, and lovely, and as rare as the moon entering eclipse. Oh, I could be angry right now, terribly angry, having just finished an almost 1300-page fictional tome that ends with the words "To Be Continued", but I choose not to be since I chose to hang in there with this book long after I had concluded that it would not reward in ways commensurate with its length. I have lolled in the wild green above the reefs of the Caribbean and sailed over purple deeps in the Mediterranean, I have seen the inimitable mist of hot summer on the Chesapeake when all hues blend between the sky and the bay.Mailer comes up with a truly ingenious plot device: Harvey assigns Harry to track down the cryptonymous C. else would commit to print such writing as "Miami, soft as a powderpuff, murderous as a scorpion, lay suspended like Nirvana"?
