(And lest anyone think me callous, I should add that I don’t have any pets!) The world of Torak and Renn is that of six thousand years ago. That’s after the Ice Age, but before farming spread to Scandinavia – when the land was one vast Forest.

I worked as a solicitor in the City for thirteen years: lots of all-nighters and weekends in the office. The challenge made it fun for a while, but that soon palled. I don’t miss it at all. This book pulled me in immediately, Michelle Paver still conjures up all of the atmosphere of the original books and expands the stories of her beloved characters, while still isn’t afraid to impact them and their world massively. He is quite unhinged, with his only goal in life seemingly being continually skinning people. He tends to not show any other emotion than his sadistic enjoyment at other's pain and fear. However, he has been shown sparing Janice on multiple occasions.Like the previous books in the series, Skin Taker takes place in northern Scandinavia, so the wildlife is appropriate to the region – as are the seasonal changes in the hours of daylight. However I’ve changed mountains, rivers and coastlines to suit the stories, which means that you won’t find the specific features of Torak’s world in a modern atlas.

Sometimes it’s not in full sentences but I think that helps with the speed and the mood of the story.

I suppose I should start with a disclaimer that I’m pretty much incapable of being objective with this series; I first discovered the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness in primary school and it was the first series that I fell in love with. In a way it sculpted who I am as both a reader and writer, and as such I’m aware that rose-tinted glasses is an understatement. I think everyone has books like that, though: the ones that seem as though they were written specifically for you, that speak to your interests and passions and contain worlds you can entirely lose yourself in. Is this series objectively better than some of the literary masterpieces I’ve read over the years? Probably not, yet I’d still rank it above most of those classics. After my most recent reading experience, I needed an author I trusted to give me a really good novel. Michelle Paver is one of my favourites and yet again she delivered a masterpiece. Also, where VIPER’S DAUGHTER focussed on Renn’s emotional troubles, SKIN TAKER finds Torak struggling to cope when his beloved Forest is under threat. Journey to the Stone Age era as clans come face to face with a devastating dark time that will test the Clans as never before. This immersive read leaves no stone unturned as clans must find a way to put aside their rivalry and work together in this battle for survival of their beloved forest.I really enjoyed in this book how it switched from each different character’s point of view and how
