For anyone who wants to brush up on their history before visiting Scotland, A Traveller’s History of Scotland will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the nations past and present.Knox is a biased narrator, of course, but like Julius Caesar before him he talks up his enemies, and his prose is amazingly lively and vivid. The book also describes the recent history of the 19th century to the present and Scotland's place in the world today. I love Scotland the country, and have been there several times and it's one of my favorite places in the world, but I think my desire to read this was mostly born out of my ceaseless Anglo/Scotphilia, not out of a sense of heritage. An interesting book on the history of Scotland by noted archaeologist/documentary presenter, and Scotsman, Neil Oliver.
