About this deal

Vervet monkeys share a scarily high number of similarities with ourselves. While we are genetically closer to chimpanzees, our behaviour is more like vervet monkeys, an animal with one of the most complex social structures in the wildlife world. Vervets live in large troops of 10 to 50 or more monkeys. Sometimes these troops are subdivided into smaller troops. It’s like a large group of friends or a family unit. Different people socialise together at different times but all are part of the same overall troop.

Red butts in monkeys and other primates serve various purposes, including indicating fertility and social status. It’s fascinating that some monkeys have more vibrant and colorful butts than others. While some, like the mandrills, have multicolored bums, others, like the Celebes crested macaque, have outrageously swollen and bright red butts. Most of the cast have this trait, though it isn't usually drawn attention to. It is brought up in Touch & Roll via the title screen, which has AiAi Shaking the Rump at the player and prompting them to touch his behind to proceed to the rest of the game. The structure of the mandrill’s butt tissue reflects blue photons and absorbs other colors, making the blue color more visible. What monkey has a pink bum?

This conspicuous coloration serves as a signal to potential mates, with more vibrant colors often being perceived as more attractive. During the mating season, the color intensity may increase, emphasizing its significance in attracting a mate.Always Lots of Heinies at the Zoo is a book about Exactly What It Says on the Tin, and the mandrill's blue booty is one of the titular heinies described in the book, as well as featuring prominently on the cover. The book also points out how the distinct blue coloration is exhibited specifically by males.

They have a hierarchical social structure, with dominant males and females occupying the top positions. Grooming is an essential social behavior, helping to reinforce bonds within the group and maintain group cohesion. In some cultures, red is associated with attraction, aggression, or dominance, which may have contributed to using the term “red butt” to describe these primates. During their heat periods, the female baboons’ butts become bright red and swollen, always catching the male baboons’ attention, and making them desire the females more.Gunfire Reborn: The Snowy Mandrill enemy encountered in the Hyperborean Jokul, oddly enough, displays a bare pink rear end only when it's by itself and not being ridden by a Mutant Penguin as a Mandrill Cavalry. The IUCN Red List classifies the rhesus macaque as Least Concern. While their population is stable and not currently facing significant threats, localized populations may be vulnerable to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and hunting. Vaglio, S.; Minicozzi, P.; Romoli, R.; etal. (2016). "Sternal gland scent-marking signals sex, age, rank, and group identity in captive mandrills". Chemical Senses. 41 (2): 177–186. doi: 10.1093/chemse/bjv077. PMID 26708734.

Mandrills are found in the tropical rainforests of western and central Africa, primarily in Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo. They prefer dense forests with plenty of cover and access to water sources. C. Social Behavior and Reproduction Vervet monkeys are classified as an animal of least concern on the IUCN Red List. However, the scientific data is limited and out of date. We simply do not know the current vervet monkey population and whether it is declining or stable. Scientific value: Studying these species can improve our understanding of primate behavior, social structures, and communication, as well as shed light on the evolutionary links between primates, including our species. After birth a baby clings to its mother most of the time. However, the baby is shown off to other females and the rest of the troop enjoys a turn grooming and caring for the newborn. To understand how photons move through a complex tissue like skin, lets compare a red photon with a blue photon as it hits two tissue layers. Tissue “A” is on top, and Tissue “B” is underneath. If layers A and B were both white (like milk), they would reflect red and blue photons equally and you would see both colors.a b c Setchell, J. M.; Dixson, A. F. (2001). "Changes in the secondary sexual adornments of male mandrills ( Mandrillus sphinx) are associated with gain and loss of alpha status". Hormones and Behavior. 39 (3): 177–184. doi: 10.1006/hbeh.2000.1628. PMID 11300708. S2CID 7560147. Vervets can also be identified through their troop behaviour. They are highly social animals who typically live and travel together, in comparison to some monkeys who can be solitary or bashful. Reforestation projects: Reforestation efforts can help restore degraded habitats and improve connectivity between fragmented primate populations. Mandrills mainly live in tropical rainforests but will also travel across savannas. They are active during the day and spend most of their time on the ground. Their preferred foods are fruit and seeds, but mandrills will consume leaves, piths, mushrooms, and animals from insects to juvenile antelope. Mandrills live in large, stable groups known as "hordes" which can number in the hundreds. Females form the core of these groups, while adult males are solitary and only reunite with the larger groups during the breeding season. Dominant males have the most vibrant colors and fattest flanks and rumps, and have the most success siring young.
