About this deal

I would count myself as an average fan, however, and by the second half of his diaries was finding it hard not to love him less . What was interesting was the information about the film, "Mesmer", which I hadn't realised had ever been completed. And what about creating a working environment with Ang – who, reading between the already apparent lines, is used to ‘conducting’ his actors, rather than nurturing.

Yet Rickman is genuinely stunned when Sean Mathias, trying to direct him in Shakespeare, finally demands, ‘Would it hurt you to show some f***ing charm? In the manner that it takes a large ground crew to put a single fighter pilot in the air, it takes a large company of humans to move a famous actor through his days: makeup and clothing and sets and black cars and interview requests and tickets and reservations and all the rest. Rickman didn’t suffer fools and his intelligence keeps chafing against his fellow professionals – their self-absorption, their vanity, their unresponsiveness. Maureen Paton explores the actor's closely guarded private life and goes beyond the public persona to find the real Rickman, the working class boy. The mention of ‘process’ brings me to something that Rickman expounds on strongly, and regularly in his diaries. Commenting on the young ‘wizards’ of Harry Potter, this great RSC actor clearly had his work cut out at times during filming but evidently enjoyed the experience! but this isn’t done consistently, and some clarifications are instead given by footnote at the end of the year (which is not very helpful for anyone, like myself, reading an ebook copy).

That turned out to be Bonnie Wright (who portrayed Ginny Weasley) and Alfred Enoch (who portrayed Dean Thomas). Someone needs to mention to the narrator that the way to pronounce the letter L as in LA is ‘el’ and not ‘al’. As much as I still adore and respect this remarkable man, this was a book I simply couldnt read and finish. While Rickman may have had qualms about the franchise, Harry Potter is widely recognized as one of the actor’s best roles and a testament to his abilities to captivate and inspire. In her Foreword, Dame Thompson says Rickman was ‘profoundly nurturing and imperturbably distant,’ ‘temperamental and languid’.
